Imagine being a dying WW2 veteran and the last thing you see on earth is your great-grandson invading Portland for fascism and losing to a frog wizard.

I saw that, my eyes bulged, and I went and tracked down the essay. The writer was done dirty by the subeditor. His point isn't that Cash was or wasn't cool (except in a qualified way to do with 60s counterculture), but that as a songwriter he hasn't gotten the same respect as Dylan and Springsteen.

That part about worrying about not being able to go to his friend's grave was incredibly touching. I was completely sidelined by it.

It has been such a great honour to be one of Krasznahorkai's interpreters into English (since 2008), along with George Szirtes and John Batki. I also have to mention the visionary New Directions and my beyond stellar editor Declan Spring 🧡

Every year I watch a person step through a door and tell the world who's the Nobel Prize laureate in literature and make a post about it to MetaFilter. Back in the day I'd often have those posts up before newssites had their stories up, but nowadays journalists know about the Nobel livestream too.
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature Goes to László Krasznahorkai
László Krasznahorkai is the 2025 Nobel laureate in literature. He is a 71-year-old Hungarian novelist, perhaps best known for his novel Satantango, which was made into a film by the same name. If...
