Today's the last day to complete this short survey for the ARC about the use of AI in grant assessment.

Once again, ARC hits the 🎯 with their comms strategy:

8pm on Sunday night. When the eyeballs of researchers are glued to … twitter?

They've not posted this anywhere else. I can't think of a better way to _not_ "engage stakeholders". Almost uncanny.
Screenshot of tweet from the ARC about a survey they want "stakeholders" to complete. Black text on white background above a rather outsized picture of dark blue smudges on a light-blue background. One smudge says "Survey" … you know, to catch your eye?

Crossing new thresholds always daunts me, but on the other hand that's how I know I'm genuinely trying something new and it usually works out just fine. I hope it's that way for you too!

"We’re left at a crossroads where we must consider nothing less than what kind of jobs we want people to be able to do, what kind of work and which institutions we think are important as a society, and what we’re willing to do to protect them ..." www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/the-ai-job...?
The AI jobs crisis is here, now
It's not coming, it has already arrived.

interesting that most replies are about place names. Anyone got any common nouns to add?

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Nice. Loads of these kinds of pairings in UK/Australian places (usually the Aus one is closer to phonetic, like Launceston:
in Tasmania: Lon-cess-ton
in Cornwall: Lahn-stən

Ditto it's Mew-b'n (or, permissible: Mel-b'n) not Mel-boRn for Melbourne

Have you read Vivian Shaw's Greta Helsing series? I'm two books in and have enjoyed it very much

I wonder if he ever bought one of those jars of Jason Donovan's breath...

Gold. When I saw Beaches, the lady in front started sobbing so loudly and dramatically (imagine Emma Thompson ugly crying in Love Actually, but more so) as the sad scenes mounted up, that my friend and I got the giggles and had to leave. {joke's on me, I am now a massive crier in movies}

God I hate this kind of climate reporting. PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY CARE ABOUT THE EARTH MAY BE DAMAGING IT BY EXISTING

Do you need a time out? Take a deep sniff of this vanilla-scented orchid! I have loads of phalaenopsis but this is my first oncidium, so I'm really happy with my success getting it to repeat flower.
A small orchid in a white pot. It has a spike of six flowers, with pale yellow, bright yellow and deep gold spotted petals

David Suchet should be out there suing their butts off.
