That's if you need 1 run. It lowers your expected run total for the inning but increases your odds of scoring one run. The Brewers needed 3 or more.

Ortiz had a .276 OBP this year, a down season, and .299 in his career. In the aggregate, he's got at least 35%-40% chance of either reaching base or moving the runners with a ball in play in that situation. Much better than a sac bunt designed to surrender an out for a lower expected run output
