Well, long story short… It's a set of statues for the church, ordered by the abbot 🥹 At the start of his living in Rúnbeg (which is a Catholic village) Hogan was a raging protestant and, seeing that people are unwilling to convert, he mangled the statue of the local saint. ↓

A bit more about the marks: Hogan is not above corporal punishment in the earlier parts of their story, as he was taught that pain cleanses a soul of its sins. And, well, Hugo's soul is as sinful as any drunkard's, thief's or womaniser's. Hogan believes he's saving Hugo, but it's rather debatable.

been studying Hugo's physique tonight. It wasn't easy: I'm not used to drawing skinny people. And O'Dwyer is skinny, scrawny even. No wonder, though: he's restless, always running around, dancing, climbing trees and walls, etc.

The marks on his body are Hogan's work, unfortunately.
