Staffordshire County Council is ignoring the fact that many of the Union flags on the Western Bypass in Lichfield have 'Unite the Kingdom' written on them. Therefore, these are not just national flags, but far right political slogans. The county flag protocol say that modified flags cannot be flown.

I raised this with Staffs County Council. Reform leader reply:

We are clear in our position that national pride should be celebrated, and we should all be proud to fly the flags of our nation. The County Council will only remove flags flying from lampposts if they are deemed a danger to the public.

They said that national flags fall under deemed consent. They mentioned some conditions, such as not obstructing the highway. They said consent may be needed if a flag is flown from a non-standard structure or if multiple flags are proposed in a way that could affect the local area.

I've asked the council and our MP what they intend to do, now it's confirmed that the person responsible for the flags is getting them from Yaxley-Lennon as part of an organised far right campaign. So far, I've had some nonsense from the council about planning permission not being needed.
