Falc’hun’s style!

In the early 1900s, German communities in the South Caucasus lived under Russian rule and used both German and Russian in daily life. Studying newspapers of that time helps linguistics see how migration and empire left their mark on language and identity.

A beige square graphic announcing a new article in Cadernos de Linguística. The title reads “Language and Identity in Historical Caucasian German.” Below the title are two bullet points listing the authors: Doris Stolberg and Katharina Dück, both affiliated with the Leibniz Institute for the German Language. A small stylized logo appears in the bottom left corner.

There are 1.1 million of speakers of Estonian nowadays while there was 1.2 million of Breton speakers in 1952 (estimation).
Despite a similar population size (at different periods of time, of course), the sociolinguistic situation of each language differs completely. It is really fascinating !

This is a very stimulating review of Rozenn Milin’s last book "La Honte et le Châtiment. Imposer le français (Bretagne, France, Afrique et autres territoires)" by Jean Le Bihan on @laviedesidees.bsky.social

A lot of food for thought, especially when you are in Estonia at the present time!

How the process of language endangerment and the decrease of of linguistic diversity work from a social and historical perspective?
A view from Western Brittany but also Western Africa or Japan

Suaimhneas síoraí ar a anam Gaelach. 💚
B’ambasadóir é Manchán dár nglúin féin agus duine a bhí lárnach san athbheochán a tharla ar na mallaibh sa chultúr agus sa Ghaeilge. Sheas sé i lár an aonaigh agus thiocfadh a rá nár chuir sé é féin ansin ach gur chuir an pobal ann é.

Ina bhealach séimh féin, chuir sé i gcuimhne dúinn fán ról atá ag an teanga maidir le tuiscint níos doimhne a fháil ar an cheantar thart orainn agus orainn féin.

Mairfidh a oidhreacht i meon fiosrach spreagúil na nGael agus iontu siúd a théann sa tóir ar shaol níos doimhne agus fíoraithe.

Suaimhneas síoraí ar a anam Gaelach. 💚 Perhaps unwillingly, he was the foremost cultural ambassador for our generation and instrumental in the resurgence of Irish language and culture.

He gently reminded us of the role the language has in understanding our surroundings, and knowing ourselves.

His legacy will live on in the curious minds of the Irish and beyond, in those who seek a deeper and more fulfilling life.

Go raibh míle maith agat. I thought so, but the expert’s view is far more sounder than a vague intuition 😉
