Counterpoint: I had a friend who hated Bruce Springsteen. Found out he had literally only ever heard the cover version. Played him “Greetings from Asbury Park”. He was blown away and became a huge Bruce fan. True story!

Literally saw this exact thing play out with my neighbors. Pretty close, vacationed together stuff like that. After trump, one family just slowly stopped. The MAGA fam is still asking “why aren’t they friends anymore?” 5+ years later. Complete lack of self awareness.

I would also say this has to do with differing perception. To a MAGA, they didn’t end the relationship, the other person did. So they would never end a relationship b/c of political views, the other people always end it b/c of political views. Part of Murc’s law. They just don’t have agency.
