Though Kaveh had finally succeeded, he wanted to see that smile again more than ever now - greedy for just one more glimpse of Alhaitham so gentle and sincere.

Fine then. If that was what would bring out that striking smile on Alhaitham’s lips...

But before Kaveh could conjure a response, Alhaitham exhaled a soft hum, turned on his heel, and disappeared back into the hallway as if he hadn’t just flipped Kaveh’s stomach upside down.

Alhaitham’s eyes softened. “It’s just nice to see you happy,” he said simply. “You’ve been stressed lately.“

Kaveh’s heart gave an unsteady lurch, trying to force its way up through his throat and launch itself straight at Alhaitham’s stupidly handsome face.

“What -” Kaveh cleared his throat, trying to sound casual, “- what are you smiling about?”

It came out more accusatory than he intended, affronted that after weeks of wasted effort Alhaitham was giving Kaveh what he’d been chasing so desperately for no reason at all.

“So you do have dimples,” he blurted - because clearly, that was the most crucial information to confirm while his heart was combusting.

Though Alhaitham arched a slightly amused eyebrow at him... his smile didn’t fade.

Alhaitham was smiling.

It was softer than the first time, unmistakably warm and unguarded... and it incited instant chaos behind Kaveh’s ribcage.

For a moment, Kaveh wondered if he was hallucinating from too much time spent staring at his blueprint.

When the wood gave a faint creak in protest beneath the weight of Alhaitham’s shoulder, Kaveh turned... and froze.

There stood Alhaitham, leaning against the doorframe, sunlight catching the edges of his silvery-blue hair.

A breathless laugh escaped him, filled with equal parts disbelief and joy. He beamed down at the blueprint, basking in the warm sunlight beginning to seep through his curtains.

He didn’t even notice Alhaitham in the doorway, coffee in hand, watching him quietly.

But by dawn, ink-stained and bleary-eyed after spending the night berating himself, he’d unwittingly solved the stubborn issue of foundational support with well-placed pillars titled at an odd angle.

It was as if the design had decided to cooperate out of pity.

Kaveh had stayed up all night fighting with a commission. Exhausted from weeks of wracking his brain on how to get those damn kissable - kissable?? - lips to tilt just a fraction upward, he was running low on inspiration for his actual work.

Tail between his legs, Kaveh finally gave up.

Then, after a few days of sulking around the house, the breakthrough happened when he wasn’t even trying.

When he gave it to Alhaitham that evening, holding his breath in hopeful anticipation, he was repaid with nothing more than a scowl.

Finally, he gave in to Plan D: going broke.

Kaveh scrounged together what mora he could, even dipping into his rent money for the month, to purchase a rare, tattered book Alhaitham had been eyeing at the bazaar for weeks.

As the days passed, Kaveh only grew more obsessed.

He began to notice the subtle softening at the corners of Alhaitham’s mouth whenever Kaveh frowned at his work or came home drenched by rain.

Of course - the only thing that would amuse Alhaitham was Kaveh’s suffering.
