Pragmatism has become the most useful way I know to survive modern life.

Not a grand theory, not a magic pill or perfect fix - just a way to see what actually works.

This is the first in a series of essays on pragmatism.

A great deal for Nic's fantastic book. Also an opportunity to support a great person (which I think is important!)

Finished. My hot take ... crikey. This is a raw, cut and thrust memoir describing a life that has mostly been a long and hard uphill drag. Why would it not be given racism, poverty, undiagnosed ADHD etc etc?
@kristiedegaris.bsky.social
Read in 2 x 3 hour sessions.
Recommended.

Also, you got through it so fast!

Thank you for reading and for sharing and I completely agree with what you said above. This guy is considered an expert, the best, highly respected etc. How far we have fallen...Scotland (anywhere) can do better than that.
kristiedegaris.bsky.social
And if you want to share feedback, I always love to hear what readers think (good or bad, but hopefully good)
kristiedegaris.bsky.social
Oh how exciting! I hope you get so much out of it. I love to hear what readers think, the good and the bad, so if you feel able, do let me know. And thank you for ordering my book <3

just ordered a copy of @kristiedegaris.bsky.social ’s memoir,‘Drystone' - I’ve been excited and curious to read this for a while, and it’s nice to order a book from an independent publisher, Birlinn, that I’m not familiar with
kristiedegaris.bsky.social
Ah I am so pleased to hear this! Wonderful to support indy publishers, and I really hope you get a lot out of the book! Thank you so much!

Think we need a 'can't read/want to read' support group.

"[Stone] Created by powerful natural forces. But unlike the stars, I can hold it in my hands. Shape it with a hammer. Stack it in such a way that someone two hundred years from now will see those stones—lifted by my body, placed by my fingers—and know something of my intent." 🫶

Thanks for the share @danigaravelli.bsky.social

I loved your winning essay from the first year and I'm looking forward to reading this one too.
kristiedegaris.bsky.social
The judges described it as “flinty, telegraphic prose” and “an essay of incredible economy”. A bit like drystone itself, doing what you can with what you have.

Congrats to Tamara Fulcher on winning the Anne Brown Essay prize 2025! Very much looking forward to reading her essay.

Here are a couple of photos of Wigtown in the sun and a photo of me that I forced my ex-husband (and best pal) to take. The 'SV' stands for Svea Vikander of course.
Close-up view through a dusty blue-paned window, showing wooden bookshelves filled with second-hand books, including paperbacks by Andy McNab, James Patterson, and various thrillers and novels. Woman with short dark and grey hair wearing a teal-blue blouse and dark jeans, standing by a stone wall beside a river. A weathered red phone box is on the right, with trees and fields in the background. Concrete wall with a street sign reading “Low Vennel.” At the base of the wall, rows of plants grow from colourful old wellington boots and containers, next to a metal stand with hanging planters.
