Shutdowns, Strikes, and Solidarity
This week on The Labor Force Podcast, we’re taking a hard look at what happens when the system stops working — and workers don’t. The federal government shutdown continues to ripple through the lives of hundreds of thousands of public servants, forcing families to make impossible choices. In St. Louis, the Boeing strike enters its third month as machinists stand firm for fair pay and respect. Meanwhile, contagious organizing is spreading in Houston’s hospitality sector and California’s health care system, where Kaiser nurses are threatening one of the largest walkouts in company history. We also unpack California’s groundbreaking new law allowing Uber and Lyft drivers to unionize — a major shift for gig workers nationwide. Then we close with a generational deep dive: from pension gridlock in Europe to Gen X’s fight for survival in an AI-driven job market. From shutdowns and strikes to questions of fairness across generations, this episode asks: what kind of economy are we really building — and who is it working for? Segments: “Surviving the Shutdown” – The human toll of Washington’s dysfunction “The Boeing Standoff” – Three months in, the fight for dignity on the line “Contagious Organizing” – Houston hospitality workers and California nurses rise up “The Gig Worker Breakthrough” – Sectoral bargaining comes to California “Gerontopia and Gen X” – Generational strain and the future of work

From Coal to Code: Revitalizing Homer City
Why is Western Pennsylvania becoming the unexpected center of America's AI revolution? Host Kirk Westwood sits down with Shawn Steffee, Business Agent for Boilermakers Local 154 and seasoned union leader in the energy sector. A Homer City native who became a boilermaker in 2002, Steffee was elected Executive Board Trustee in 2017 and appointed Business Agent in 2018, gaining national recognition for his advocacy of union labor and fossil fuels industry. He believes natural gas and AI infrastructure represent the next industrial revolution for Western Pennsylvania. The conversation covers the devastating impact of coal plant closures, the $10 billion Homer City transformation into an AI-powered natural gas facility, and how union building trades are preparing for massive construction opportunities ahead. Steffee discusses workforce training needs, environmental advantages of natural gas over renewables, and his vision for replicating this model across coal country. "I really don't know a damn thing about AI, but the building trades sure as hell know how to build power plants," Steffee explains. Can this project become the blueprint for saving America's coal communities? Shawn Steffee is a seasoned union leader and advocate for skilled labor in the energy sector. A native of Homer City, Pennsylvania, he began his career as a Boilermaker in 2002, serving in various supervisory roles. In 2017, he was elected as an Executive Board Trustee for Boilermakers Local 154, and in 2018, he was appointed as a Business Agent. Steffee has been instrumental in political advocacy, serving as Chairman of the Local 154 LEAP Committee, and is recognized nationally for his efforts in promoting union labor and the fossil fuels industry. The Rick Smith Show 10-10-2025
Rick Smith talks with Graham Trainor, president of the Oregon AFL-CIO, who debunks media myths about “war-torn” Portland, describing a peaceful, united city resisting Trump’s attempted militarization. Trainor explains how Oregon’s labor movement and local leaders are standing firm against federal overreach and fighting to protect jobs, rights, and democracy. Later, comedian and podcaster Pete Dominick joins the show, bringing humor and hope to dark times. He argues that laughter, free speech, and community action are essential tools for confronting authoritarianism—and proves that even in chaos, collective resistance and courage can still prevail.
