Remember that any mech can make a basic hack attack.
Sometimes it easier to clear up grunts with a simple hack on the e-defense rather than shooting their (usually) larger evasion.

Also the book says the GM should tell you what NPC archetypes you are up against and that you SHOULD look up the stats
