I’ve since been to Ireland many times. For example I spent 6 weeks one summer doing my dissertation on the geology of Whiddy Island ( Bantry Bay), and My wife and I recently did a road trip round most of the coast.

So I try to explore my Irish background, through music, books, films and history

I was born in Leicester but my mum/dad are Irish (there’s a big Irish community in Leicester).

All my relatives are Irish but none speak Gaeilge. We would go to Portadown every summer when kids (bear in mind I was a kid during the troubles, so Portadown was a rough place for catholics in the 70’s)

I tried going to Gaeilge lessons last summer (bought the text as well).

I lasted one lesson ! 😂. Pitiful I know, but at 65, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
