obviously he’s wrong but his head still says “ah yes, of course, only now are we truly mates and Eddie loves me again” except Eddie is ass deep in this and it has literally never changed. he’s been treating Steve like his mate because he LOVES HIM and this was another chance to prove that

i think what’s really ✨fun✨ is that Steve truly believed all of Eddie’s affection was shown out of guilt/obligation. he sees himself as a huge burden that was thrust upon someone who hates him, doesn’t want to be around him, and is only doing these “loving” actions to get away from him again
