But then I spotted these 2 ducks asleep in the harbour at Maheroarty. A comical wait for them to pop their heads up, Irelands first Harlequins! Great to hear they are back again this morning. #donegalbirding

We were hoping that the storm would deliver something from the west. And it did. Swainson’sThrush Foula today. Very difficult to get close too, hence the most record or record shots. #RareBirdsUk

Great sea watch from St Ives on Saturday with great views of at least 6 first-cycle long-tailed skuas.

What a day that was - I’ll never forget the chaos when it was refound and everyone scrambled back into the cars. An absolutely unbeatable twitch!

Having had a quiet 5 days birding in the Spurn area, news broke of a White- Throated Needletail further North. We dashed to Hornsea Mere hoping to find it there when it was then reported further North at Bempton cliffs. 35 minutes late and Bingo. What a cracking bird. A borrowed pic attached.

Congratulations to all involved in finding the White-throated Needletail in Yorkshire today. It brings back memories of 2 adrenaline-filled hours on Barra in June 2017. Still the best bird on the British List in my opinion. #BirdingScotland

Well that wasn't on my bingo card for today, even when news broke at Tophill. My kids missed the train home due to a slow bus, and so I was in Bridlington when the White-throated Needletail was refound at Bempton #birding #yorkshirebirding

Long-tailed Skua montage pics from Pendeen, 5th Oct. At least nine were seen from St. Ives and Pendeen over the 4th & 5th Oct (Storm Amy). It’s been a bumper year for the species with numbers way above the county rolling average. Good luck to the county recorder assessing them all!

"The causes of insufficient reproductive success in our two study populations were low rates of whole-nest survival, which were only sufficiently high to maintain population size for nests in gardens. Low nest survival rates were mostly the result of egg or chick predation."

Two great first days of birding on Flores (Azores) with the french/swiss team: Dickcissel, Ovenbird, YB Cuckoo, 5 RE Vireos and Subalpine Warbler(!). Plenty more to find, as good numbers seem to have arrived quite a while ago. The island is huge (and beautiful), and we have it all to ourselves.

Had the pleasure of seeing Great Grey Owls with @peralstrom.bsky.social this summer (pic: @tmbirding.bsky.social) - and heard some superb tales of birding & ornithological discovery in China in the 1980s. He's written this splendid article about this - screenshots as I don't have link. Pp 1-3 here

Good to meet you yesterday John! Hopefully there will be more good seawatching conditions down here before the autumn is out!
