On #ThisDayInHistory in 1940, #Japan carried out a biological weapons attack on #Ningbo, #Zhejiang, China. The #Kaimingjie germ weapon attack involved agents of #Unit731 air-dropping grain filled with #BubonicPlague fleas on Kaiming Street. At least 100 died, likely much more.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1964, #RonaldReagan's political career on the reactionary #FarRight began with a televised speech for #BarryGoldwater. The slow transformation of the #Republican Party into a home for racists and radical nationalists was under way.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1810, US president Madison sent troops to seize the westernmost part of Spanish Florida. #Madison had covertly fomented insurrection throughout #Florida, and a group of Anglo settlers in a part of West Florida obliged. The region was annexed to Louisiana.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1962, Soviet naval officer #VasiliArkhipov likely prevented a #NuclearWar by vetoing launch of a nuclear torpedo during the #CubanMissileCrisis. Three men had to agree to fire and only #Arkhipov opposed it. Doing so prevented full-scale nuclear exchange.
As I don't like #WhiteNationalist fools to get away without public shame and ridicule for their beliefs, I'm sharing a compilation of this fellow's comments on two recent posts and a DM. #Fascism & self-owns go hand in hand because #racism and stupidity are always comorbidities.
#Cuomo, like too many liberals, is fine with racist ethnostates and complained in the debate about #Mamdani wanting Israel to be a normal democracy. It isn't normal and Zionism keeps it that way. Settler #terrorism like this assault on a grandmother is common and state supported.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1956, the #HungarianRevolution began. Americans like to claim it was pro-capitalist but students and workers rose up within #socialist structures like workers councils (soviets), under socialist leaders, to demand elections and an end to USSR's domination.
Over half of Americans have less than a sixth grade reading level. Just as some highly literate people never attend college, there are college students failing at simple English. The weaponization of ignorance in far-right identity politics is dangerous.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1790, during the #NorthwestIndianWar, #HarmarsDefeat was secured by #LittleTurtle and the #MiamiConfederacy of allied #NativeAmerican tribes. A series of battles over four days were all victories for the outnumbered #indigenous resistance fighters.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 451, the #CouncilOfChalcedon adopted #dyophysitism as Christian dogma. In arguing Christ has two natures, one human and one divine, combined in one person, it created an enduring schism with churches in Egypt, Syria, India, Ethiopia, Armenia, and Eritrea.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 2003, the #DwarfPlanet #Eris was first seen orbiting in the #KuiperBelt beyond Neptune. Larger than #Pluto, with a surface area like South America, its discovery triggered Pluto's loss of status, which suits its being named for the goddess of discord. 😉
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1946, Cunard liner #RMSQueenElizabeth arrived in NYC on her postwar maiden voyage. Due to the outbreak of World War II, she had served as a troopship first. Her entry into civilian service began the most successful phase of Cunard's Atlantic dominance.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1921, #WarrenGHarding, an otherwise incompetent Republican president, became the first one in US history to deliver a speech criticizing #lynching in the #DeepSouth. Flash forward to 2025 and GOP evangelical podcasters are actually supporting slavery.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1879, #ThomasEdison applied for a patent for the incandescent light bulb. His patent was initially rejected, as it was based on preëxisting inventions (bulbs were already sufficiently practical for instalation in London) but he did get a US patent in 1889.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1956, the main force of Kenya's #anticolonial #MauMauRebellion was crushed. UK leaders #WinstonChurchill and #AnthonyEden were ruthless defenders of British colonialism. Thousands of Kenyans were killed in action or executed for demanding their freedom.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1805, #LordNelson and his 27 British ships defeated a combined French/Spanish fleet of 33 ships in the #BattleOfTrafalgar. He cleverly scattered the enemy, allowing his better-trained seamen to win with just 1/9th the deaths experienced on the other side.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1797, #USSConstitution was launched in Boston. The oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat, she is maintained by replacing timbers periodically using a special grove of white oak in Indiana. The survival of #OldIronsides is a remarkable achievement.
