I feel like we've gotten numb to these threats but it really is something to stack them all next to each other www.theverge.com/policy/79051...
Ingersoll’s calls for violence are in line with the official Republican position. John Gillette, a Republican state representative for Arizona, called for Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) to be hanged on his X account. Two Kansas Republicans alluded to — “joked” — about shooting a former Democratic colleague on the floor of the Kansas House. Louisiana Republican Clay Higgins threatened to jail the mayor of Denver, while Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna threatened to refer him for criminal charges. Arizona Republican Paul Gosar shared an anime video depicting him killing Ocasio-Cortez and attacking then-President Joe Biden.

Denaturalization is another favorite Republican threat. Republican Andy Ogles of Tennessee said that New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani should be stripped of his citizenship and deported; Ogles later demanded the same for Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois. Texas Republican Brandon Gill, Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, and South Carolina Republican Nancy Mace have called for Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, a naturalized US citizen, to be deported.

I found a 19th century Cat Villain!
A huge chonk of a fluffy cat sitting on a table near an open fire. The cat is cream and grey and appears to be shaped like a barrel in a fur coat. They are scowling fiercely with their moustache and bewhiskered ears apparently flowing back into the cold wind. There's a definite vibe that this villainous cat twirls their moustache as they evict orphans into the aforementioned blizzard and think Scrooge was an easy-going lightweight. They are magnificent.

my beautiful perfect idiot daughter found the go kit I assembled in case of emergencies, ripped open the bag of her dry food, and started snacking on it. she has plenty of food - I guess she just wanted variety? look at this creature
A tuxedo cat with a pink nose and wide green eyes looks mildly affronted to be photographed.

it's so pronounced that it almost reads like fiction! like I can even envision the fiction version of this (author is arrested by fascists in the end, even as she continues to insist that you can't really tell who is a fascist)
lopatto.bsky.social
oh definitely. but the unity stuff is way less clear-cut than the diana stuff, in part because diana lived so much longer and kept insisting that she did in fact believe in fascism! I don't trust her analysis that unity was just manic but I also do not have enough evidence to totally rule it out

bad old jessica was a communist EVEN THOUGH Stalin did purges!

diana the angel definitely wasn't REALLY a fascist even though hung out with Hitler and got married at Goebbels' house. who can know what was in her secret heart even though she repeatedly said and wrote what she thought

dude she hates jessica it's bizarre

"The Frog might, as a person, have a message to convey, but the Frog’s costume has no meaning, either. It is the juxtaposition against an increasingly militarized ICE that makes its big googly eyes so powerful."
Incredible writing, give it a read

Diana: I have contempt for democracy.
Nancy: She wants the downfall of democracy.
Biographer: Obviously Nancy was just jealous, no one could possibly believe Diana wanted the downfall of democracy.

now Thompson admirably gives us all the evidence we need as readers to see through her, among them Diana penning a Hitler apologia well after the war. but here’s the funniest bit: please compare pages 248 and 235
Page 248:

This was the central relationship of the Mitford girls, this push-and-pull between Nancy and Diana. For Nancy, denunciation was a means to even the score with one quick, almighty stroke. Yet it seems that the first attempt had not quite achieved her aim: in November 1943, when the Mosleys were released under house arrest, Nancy strode briskly into MI5 to tell them that the Home Secretary's decision was wrong. Diana, she reminded them, sought 'the downfall of England and democracy generally. It is impossible that she should have believed this, although many others did. Page 235, from Diana’s interrogation transcripts:

Explaining herself as she did, there was no sense in which Diana could ‘win' her arguments, yet she did score one intriguing victory.
Do you, she was asked, 'have a great contempt for democracy?’
'Yes.'
'And so has Hitler?'
'Yes.'
How can you say then that he admires this country, which is a
democratic country?
'Because he admires England tremendously for its general
characteristics.’

the clearest example occurs around her explanation of Diana’s imprisonment in WW2. among the people who suggest Diana is dangerous is her sister Nancy, who assisted refugees from Franco and Hitler. Thompson suggests this is jealousy over Diana’s beauty.

it’s always fascinating when a biographer is unreliable and yet gives you exactly the information you need not to trust her! I’m reading Laura Thompson’s Mitford sisters bio and she has clearly been seduced by Diana, the fascist
