#ClassicalDiscussion What are your favourite recordings of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra? These are the ones I return to most often, but I keep finding versions to challenge them.

‘Bro, no, I composed it’. So it must be true.
loveinner.bsky.social
I just said the same, but without the Symphony No.3 bit!

I love walking in that kind of weather. It always seemed to be like that on the moors when I was a kid!
loveinner.bsky.social
Not to Sibelius, but it was Mahler yes. To Bruno Walter.
loveinner.bsky.social
Haha. It’s all still there for you when you are ready. Why did you go to real country side when some other dude composed it anyway?

#A-Schubert-A-Day Day 72 ‘Am Flusse’, D160. A miniature in size only. But there is a big emotional impact here, and relationships with other songs are there to be unearthed…. www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dw.asp?dc=W2...

Funny that! Yes it’s also a really excellent Sixth. Makes total sense even when the music goes off the rails!

#NowSpinning this awesome performance of Prokofiev’s Fifth form Järvi. I love this cycle. Absolutely no holds barred!

Oramo is a force to be reckoned with in these works.

I have to say this Nielsen 2 is a treat. I listened again today and loved every second. To think that, in an interview between halves of a Prom some years back, a prommer described Nielsen as ‘Poor Man’s Dvořák’. Don’t you just love it when people try too hard to be connoisseurs!

I really like it, though the brass are blunted by the distanced sound in the Second.

#NowSpinning Sibelius Symphony No.2 from Arvo Volmer’s Adelaide cycle. I loved this set when I first heard it and I have to say my enthusiasm has not diminished. I wonder why it is mentioned so little?

#NowSpinning Playlist sorted for the drive to Norfolk. Brahms 3 with Karajan kicks things off in sumptuous style. But then some Animals with Mehta, Nielsen with Oramo and Dvořák with Ančerl for the final classic. Should cover the three hours!

#A-Schubert-A-Day Day 71 ‘Das Bild’, D155, 11 February 1815. The imagery here is indeed magical. There is something glowingly positive about this song. www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dw.asp?dc=W1...

I certainly have all four on that page yes.
loveinner.bsky.social
Yes a very similar interpretation. Possibly a bit more flexible.

#NowSpinning Marcelle Meyer plays Richard Strauss’s Burlesca for Piano and Orchestra, with Cluytens in Paris. What a wonderfully unblended sound this orchestra has. But oh what wonderful piano playing!

#NowSpinning Mahler Symphony No.1. Riccardo Chailly conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at the 1995 Amsterdam Mahler Festival. This is not the same Mahler 1 as appeared in the recent ‘Chief Conductor’ Edition. So that means there are at least four Chailly Mahler Firsts.

#A-Schubert-A-Day Day 70 ‘als ich sie erröten sah’, D153 from 10 February 1815. Graham Johnson’s essay is fascinating for this one, describing how performances are difficult and can sound inappropriately hectoring because of breathing issues! www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dw.asp?dc=W2...

I am working through the whole box and really enjoying it.
