Building a true community of care means not just teaching about rights but living them alongside our students every day. I am eager to determine how we can do this despite the complexities of our current education system.

their excitement to be heard, their deep desire to be part of decisions that affect them, is powerful. Despite the challenges of our current system, their voices are a call to action.

We need to ‘get out of the way’ and centre children’s identities to improve their Communities of Care.

Largely, that meant Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQI+, and/or disabled kids. Do we fear naming them because of our own hang-ups on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, ability, poverty? We need to ‘get out of the way,’ centre children’s identities to improve their Communities of Care.

Do we ‘lose’ something important when we shift from ‘specific’ to academic or legal terminology? In a past W2A project, we learned to ‘name’ who we meant by ‘marginalized’ children.

As a duty bearer, I am committed to ensuring communities of care for children are sustainable and outlive service providers. This requires safe spaces where children can discover their identity, their views and preferences and be children.

When reading the reports from the STM events across the country, the themes of identity, inclusion and belonging remain longstanding themes. Children are meaningful partners whose voices must be amplified to create inclusion.

Without a sense of belonging, inclusion and care, they cannot thrive. Without listening, there is no knowing.

For youth in the Atlantic provinces, they spoke about a lack of support and connection with their community. Without a sense of belonging, inclusion and care, they cannot thrive. Without listening, there is no knowing.

Listening to youth is one of the most significant rights because it allows for other rights to be activated. Without listening, there is little understanding of what young people are experiencing in their lives or what they need.
