Economically, it’s becoming worse to be a MD. Median debt is north of 200k…avg salary for a pediatrician is about 240k for example. You throw in taxes, mortgage, car payment, etc it’s going to take a big chunk of your career to pay off that debt plus interest.

Physician salaries are roughly 8% of healthcare spending. I’m a MD, I have one house and zero boats. Physician reimbursement has been cut by about 30% over the past 20 years. Hospital reimbursement has increased, that’s why so many MDs are now employed by hospitals.

It’s rapidly approaching a tipping point. Much like AI spending is propping up the stock market, healthcare profit is being concentrated in fewer and fewer areas. One reason why rural areas are in such terrible shape. Terrible payer mix and unhealthy populations. It’s a mess.

The US is spending roughly $5 trillion a year on healthcare, close to 20% of GDP. Upwards of 30% is spent solely on administrative costs which is eye watering. Also, hospitals lose tons of money on “sick” people because DRGs cap the charge.
