or: thancred is *very* doting after one of cherry’s arcadion matches, and it definitely is not because he’s distracting himself
still coming down and panting for breath, thancred turns around, cups cherry’s face in his hands, and kisses her, and kisses her, and kisses her so sweetly, his thanks made clear. they stay like that for a few long moments, smiling and pressing lips together and giggling softly. it is so domestic it makes her heart ache. “go on,” he murmurs between kisses. “go get dried off—and dressed—and rest. i’ll be out soon.” reluctant, she reaches for his wash cloth. “but…” “you’ve just taken great care of me, haven’t you, rhyse? you’ve done enough. go rest,” he says softly, taking the rag from her. she shuffles in place, her belly tight with affection from all the hannish petnames and sweet gestures. “thancred,” she begins to protest weakly, but interrupts herself with a poorly timed yawn. he kisses her again. “there’s my sweet, sleepy girl. go get ready for bed, darling.” “but i—“ “i’ll be with you soon. promise.” cherry is tired. she lets herself obey him. “I love you,” she repeats between lazy kisses. “love you.” bundled up in a thin but highly absorbant towel, cherry dries off, puts her hair up in another, and grabs a robe hanging off of the back of the bathroom door. wrapping it around herself, she plops on the sofa—utilitarian, bare bones—and waits for thancred to join her. a holographic screen flickers before her over a console table. she picks up the tablet to control it, looking for something interesting to watch. she finds coverage of an arcadion match between two opponents she hasn’t seen before. thinking she’ll use it to study for her next fight, she settles in. she doesn’t even register that she’s leaning her head back and closing her eyes. the next thing she knows, thancred is nudging her awake. “come on, love. let me get you ready for bed.” her body is heavy and leadend; moving feels almost agonizing. all she wants to do is throw herself in his lap and sleep and sleep and sleep. but she is loath to waste his time if he isn’t also tired… “hm? no, no—it must still be the middle of the afternoon. we could still go out…” her words are slurring. “you just wrapped up a rather taxing battle. or have you forgotten?” “i…” “sit up, love. i’ll handle everything.” “but…” he nudges her again. this time, despite her protests, she is pliant. he sits beside her, gently turns her away from him, and takes her long red and white hair down from its towel, carefully drying it off before taking a comb to her thick mane. before she knows it, a heavy braid is being draped over her shoulder, a delicate kiss placed to the bite on her neck, and then strong arms are lifting her, carrying her to the large bed in the back of the studio apartment. the bed’s frame is the same as everything else in solution nine; dark, sleek, plain. the bedding atop the mattress is an eclectic mix of colorful quilts and soft furs, cherry’s own personal collection from radz-at-han and ishgard. she studies thancred carefully as he fusses, setting her down over the blankets and gently undoing her robe, helping her out of her towel and making sure she’s completely dried off. if not for the numerous baths he’s given her over the years, she’d blush from how thorough he’s being. he is intent. methodical. and when he catches her watching him, the tips of his ears color ever so slightly. “what is it?” he murmurs, resuming his quest to busy himself. cherry tilts her head, ears twitching. what has gotten into him? “you are just so handsome,” she says, letting him slip the robe and towel out from under her. she doesn’t want to call him out on his coddling. he carries them to a hamper then digs around in a drawer, pulling out one of his undershirts and then a pair of her smalls. “and you are just so stunning, love,” he replies, returning to her side. she lets him pull the baggy tank top over her head, but stops him as he goes to help her with her smalls. “darling, i do think i can dress myself. but thank you,” she says, taking the underwear from him gently and putting it on. “you are being especially good to me today…” he clears his throat. “you deserve to be spoiled,” he says. she knows he means it, but she knows something else is going on, too. nearly immediately, he busies himself with something else—walking around and making sure all the blinds are closed and curtains drawn, fetching them both glasses of water, arranging the picked wildflowers in a makeshift vase. as she slides under the covers, cherry looks over at the combined calendar and chronometer—clock, she reminds herself—on her night stand. it takes her a few long moments, but realization dawns on her. it is ryne’s name day.
