No one is perfect. A lot of NDs are masking or unmasking. That’s tiring & hard to learn. A lot of NTs have expectations they don’t realize they have, or how that can be difficult for others to pick up on. As awkward as it feels, communicating honestly, directly & compassionately seems best here.

I know it’s not so simple as “always assume good faith in other people,” especially in this day & age, but that’s why I try to be honest upfront, even if it throws people off. I know what most of my pitfalls are & I’m not afraid to admit them. Learning how to handle confrontation better is one.

Sometimes tho I think the rules I have developed can annoy people of both neurotypes. I don’t assume people know right off the bat, but I do say “hey, please communicate directly with me if you have an issue. Sometimes I don’t always pick up on what’s wrong.” And get confused why that’s an issue.

can cause anxiety, confuse or distress people.

“Can we talk later? It’s nothing major. I just need some help if you’re available.”

even if it’s something bad or something to do with them, at least they know and aren’t agonizing for no reason.

I guess some of the stuff I was told by NTs made sense to me, so it became a good rule worth holding in my brain. But also, I like adapting things to make them easier and more efficient, so sometimes I combine strategies. “Use direct communication, but be kind about it.”

Sometimes I feel like a ND who became so used to NT requirements for interaction & relationships (if not thrilled about it), that sometimes I have those expectations of other NDs. Even though the NTs that imposed those ideas often failed to live up to them themselves, either with me or other friends

I don’t have the time or the energy anymore to pursue people who can’t be bothered. Friendship isn’t always easy or chill, but it shouldn’t always feel like a one sided slog.

Finally worked up the nerve to delete an old friend’s contact info. I’ve tried reaching out, offering for us to meet up or hang out, and they either don’t respond or just say they’re busy. We barely even talk or text anymore.

If they ever decide to reach out again, great. But that’ll be up to them.
