Body text: When I (18F) was walking home at night a vampire (400M) attacked me. I (kind of) kicked his ass, but my coworker (17?M) intervened and stabbed his heart, saving me in the nick of time. Turns out he’s ALSO a vampire, but he’s a great guy. Cute, too.
Now, this dead vamp’s brother and SIL are in town looking for him. My coworker and I are keeping quiet and trying to lay low—they’ll kill us if they find out what happened.

PITCH: Eighteen-year-old Laurie Loveday is having a rough night—apparently, she’s a witch, vampires are real, and they’re in Jinxborough. Oh, and their bites freaking hurt. Trying to connect with locals doesn’t mean having someone’s teeth at her neck. Unable to sass her way out of the predicament, she breaks free with her latent magic but is pushed to the ground. Right before she becomes human à la mode, Vincent, her coworker from the bookstore, appears and kills the attacker.

Vincent Fraley hates being a newbie vampire, but he’s grateful his sharp instincts saved Laurie. The transition from rebellious mortal to upstanding bloodsucker has been difficult. What’s more challenging is hiding the murder—and shielding Laurie from his obtrusive, anti-witch mother. Falling for his natural enemy is a big blunder, but Laurie makes Vincent feel human again.

They can’t get too distracted by their mutual attraction, since the slain foe’s family, House Greaves, will seek vengeance if the murder comes to light. Just when they think they’re in the clear, a ne'er-do-well vampire comes forth with photographic evidence of their transgression. Juggling their growing connection and a dwindling deadline, they must steal and destroy the images before they’re forcibly initiated into the blackmailer’s unruly clan—and a surprise guest from House Greaves has a front row seat to the “party.”

“Coffee?” Ruth asked.
“I prefer tea.” Hazel leaned her cane against the table. The brass handle had a molded ram head. She sat next to me, bones creaking. Although a couple years older than Ruth, her neat white bun had strips of gray, and she radiated powerful energy.
“I have coffee.” Ruth smiled and poured another cup.
Hazel sipped it and made a show of wrinkling her nose. “Hope I’m not interrupting. I ran into your daughter at the apothecary, and she said you’d love a visit.” Her gray-blue eyes fell on me. Deep lines formed between her translucent brows.
Ruth squeezed my shoulder. “This is Laurie—Bernadette’s granddaughter!”
“She seemed familiar,” Hazel said. “She works at the bookstore. With that thing.”
A gulp of coffee plunged down my throat. Did she mean Vincent?
“Don’t be afraid of Hazel, honey. Her tongue’s sharp, but her claws shriveled up years ago. Along with a few other things.”

The office wasn’t large—a quaint waiting area, three exam rooms, Tanner’s office, and a restroom. We split up to cover more ground, and I attempted to snoop through a computer. Admin login required. I wasn’t nearly skilled enough with technology to take a crack at it. Tanner wouldn’t store anything incriminating on devices his staff accessed, right? Punching random keys was a waste of time.
No luck with the patient rooms, either. I kept my flashlight low, avoided the windows, and rummaged through the front desk. At the back of the bottom drawer, I discovered a large shoebox. Jackpot.
I flung open the lid—it was full of nail polish. Our insider had a hobby at her day job. I sifted through the hoard of rainbow bottles, clinking like glass marbles, and plucked out a sparkly teal; Sam’s favorite color. Mermaid Mood was printed on the bottom. She’d love that. Closing the drawer, I stashed the bottle in my pocket. Miss Receptionist had so many trinkets—she wouldn’t miss it.
“Find anything?” Honor whispered, poking her head out of Tanner’s office.
