incidentally, my thoughts on canon compliance lmao — it's important for as long as there's a canon that makes sense, but if the writer of the source material proves to be an idiot, that doesn't mean i have to go along with the idiocy.
I reserve the right to do what I did with the Elden Ring DLC and say "blatant stupidity that contradicts extant text is not relevant to what I write and shall be dismissed," lol. I can't stop writers from making terrible decisions, but that doesn't mean I have any reason to respect them — I'm less a fan of 'death of the author' and more a fan of 'murder of the author if the author proves to be an idiot,' you see. While I generally try to aim for a high level of compliance with the canon up to the point at which I began writing any given fic, if something bafflingly terrible enough (in a narrative/consistency sense) happens I'll simply stick to the preexisting text instead, from before it got stupid.

this poem tells me i really need to get on wrapping up one of my extant longfics so i can start in on the one i have planned for them, the oneshot i did back in march when elegies dropped on cn isn't enough 😆

but it is indeed "just a story." their future need not be decided by it — and certainly won't be, because eblana would never allow herself to be limited by such a thing.

eblana herself, though, gives us a hint of a more positive future for them. the story node where she entices loughshinny to kill her, EA-ST-2, is called "Death of a Romance" — which aligns very much with loughshinny's poem. but what does eblana have to say about that title?

given eblana's deceit, few remain who know both of them exist. eblana can't have a real grave, and even if one were made for her it would need to be secret and likely tended only by loughshinny. all loughshinny has left, now...

is brushing the dust off of the grave of her love.

eblana is dead. loughshinny believes that eblana, in her new state, won't want to see her again (a belief i think is flawed, more later in the thread), and so all that remains is the 'gravestone'
