HS English teacher clinging to what the legendary Gwendolyn Brooks wrote: "we are each other's / harvest:" (yes, that line break feels heavier than ever these days) Also: I share writings, resources + thoughts on education at thebrokencopier.substack.com!

"But at the same time the stakes feel higher, I feel like the solutions feel smaller."

One of the places @mrneibauer.bsky.social and I arrived in our conversation: we don't think adults are meeting the moment with their "solutions" right now.

"Worrying about protecting students does not seem to be a consideration."

Worrying about protecting students does not seem to be a consideration. Presenters are often dismissive of privacy and safety of students if not explicitly promoting unethical or even illegal practices with student data.

The alarming aspect of this deliberate "anti-woke" algorithmic biasing of LLMs from an educational perspective is our institutions all bought in to an imaginary of innovation, then got locked in to enterprise contracts, and now the models are being recoded so they undermine educational values
marcusluther.bsky.social
Genuine question: for those enthusiastically pushing AI tools into every part of our education system—what checks/guardrails are there around algorithmic biases like this?

The administration “is currently pressuring OpenAI and other AI companies to make their models more conservative-friendly.”

(Also: not necessarily speaking up "here"—I don't pretend that social media posts solve anything substantively—but at least somewhere. The speaking up cannot just be from people who are resistant to AI.)
marcusluther.bsky.social
And I'll be honest here: this is where the silence of those who genuinely believe in the potential of AI in education is difficult to excuse.

I get that a lot of people are incentivized not to be critical of AI after aligning themselves with this movement, but still...

OpenAI is trying to clamp down on ‘bias’ in ChatGPT
GPT-5 is better at resisting liberal ‘pressure,’ the company says.

"What has your story as a writer been as a student?"

It's that time again: on Monday, students begin their reflection journey around their writing on this document that will be centered all the way to the finish line.

(Reflection is transformative!)

Sometimes I pause and wonder what would happen if all the time and energy and especially $$$ that has gone into AI in education the past 2 years would have been redirected towards tangible things we already know works to make classrooms and schools better.

Oh well.

Not only will AI grading be the end of teaching because of the labor dynamics Marc covers, but it kicks off a process of what I call "self-alienation" where the teachers gradually remove themselves from the essential human experiences of their own work.

I write my own exemplars for the exact same reason!

Inspired by @marcwatkins.bsky.social and wanting to share his piece with my newsletter subscribers, I put my two cents in. open.substack.com/pub/engagede...

Pretty much 100% of my frustration and cynicism this year is due to seeing adults choosing this for their classrooms and, even worse, the classrooms of others.

Maybe the most infuriating thing I've experienced in 14 years of teaching. (And no signs of it stopping.)
marcwatkins.bsky.social
Some teachers are using AI to grade and few are talking about it. Scantrons are one thing, but automating grading, feedback, and assessing written work with AI poses massive ethical challenges and should not become the default or go to choice in education.

Okay yes there are many things that AI cannot do but one thing it REALLY cannot do is match my emoji-while-grading-essays game

I mean:

❤️ love this poem for exactly this reason—it is a mainstay in our classroom now. Absolutely incredible.

Grateful to @poetrichardblanco.bsky.social for “My Father in English.”

As a Texas teacher in 2025, exposing students to stories of folks who made sacrifices that will impact generations of their family feels especially important.

(Shared with permission from the student)
Now my most favorite lines are "thank you/gracias for surrendering the past tense/ of
your life so that I might conjugate myself here/in the present of this country" (lines 29-31). Those
are words I wish to tell my parents one day due to them giving up their life in Mexico to be able
to create my life here in the US. They gave me more than what they ever had growing up and I
will always be forever grateful.

85% is an awesome ratio to live in—and don't apologize for feeling great about what's happening in your classroom!
marcusluther.bsky.social
Also something I'd love to include going forward: short reflections from other teachers—so if you have one that you think would align with what this project is aiming for, feel free to message me 😎

The goal of this is pretty simple: leaning into actual stories and problems in the classroom

(More downloads in one day than we've ever had, too, which suggests that it's a worthwhile goal!)

Trying something new out! A series of mini-episodes on actual problems in the classroom this year—and not necessarily "solutions" but rather reflections on what I realized after the fact.

First one: that tricky balance of challenging students to go above + beyond

Watching a student who very much had a roller-coaster experience last year in your classroom then step back into the classroom this year and absolutely THRIVE?

This job is really cool sometimes. (Lots of times.)

"5 is giving myself quite some grace but it feels deserved"

When you ask students to reflect on how they are doing, they share some really cool things that help you—I know this seems obvious but it's important!—understand how students see themselves as learners.

Same reason we cannot keep piling homework + extracurriculars on students and expect them to then do all of that and THEN open up a book for enjoyment...

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

While I think they should have invited me, I am digging this conversation SO MUCH because I just adore both of them.

Literally had the whole class gesture as if they were putting on different eyeglasses as we moved through the different lenses throughout the activity 🥸 no regrets!
