12th October, 1940. First flight of the TsKB-57, second prototype of the Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovík. Heavily armoured and simple to construct and repair, the aircraft mounted a variety of guns, rockets and bombs.

Colour artwork from a Tamiya model kit of a Il-2 Shturmovík flying at medium altitude over a partly forested rural area. It’s a two-seater aircraft with an inline engine, heavily framed cockpit and landing gear housed in prominent underwing pods. A machine gun and cannon protrude from each wing, while rockets or small bombs hang on the underwing pylons. On the fuselage is a patriotic slogan, with artwork of an eagle on the tailfin.

I don't get any royalties, so, hey ho!

Very crisp. Very nice work, as always.

The second book covers 1918 to 1939 in a random journey from peace to war.

Yes. (..........while not forgetting to mention the second book "If War Should Come" which disappeared up it's own wotsit and the much lamented third volume which never got beyond the initial research phase before I retired).

Mine is in the garage with a broken ignition... ££££ later it should be fine.

Looking good, Rachel. You're braver than me taking on rigging. 💪

It is compulsory to love the Westland Whirlwind.

11th October 1938: First flight of the Westland Whirlwind. The most heavily armed single-seat fighter in the world when introduced, it was also faster than its contemporaries at low level. However, it suffered from poor performance at altitude.

Artwork from a vintage Airfix kit depicting a Westland Whirlwind. It’s a sleek twin inline-engined, single seat fighter with a distinctive ‘T’ position horizontal stabiliser at the top of its tailfin. Four 20mm cannon, belching fire, protrude beyond the propeller spinners. The aircraft is depicted flying above a layer of cloud, through which a column of brownish smoke is ascending. Another Whirlwind can be seen in the background.

Looks like a normal afternoon out with my mates where I grew up.

Is this a good time to say I'm not a huge fan of flapjacks?

Very nice. I found the BA-3 kit a bit of a bugger, but I got there in the end.
