In ~2 weeks I'll begin launching my lab, the Brain Lesion and Neuromodulation Lab! I'm looking to fill 2 roles: 1 RA & 1 postdoc. If you're interested in intracranial electrical stimulation, lesion-deficit mapping, and/or neuropsychology, reach out! Official postings to come.

Lastly, I'm always happy to answer questions about living in Iowa City, but the short answer is that it is a gem!

Referrals come from a number of departments, including Neurology, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Psychiatry, and Family Practice. The patient population primarily comprises adults, though a small percentage of slots are provided to children (approximately 5%).

Founded by Arthur Benton in 1950s, the Benton Neuropsychology Clinic today serves approximately 2000 patients per year with specialized diagnostic and rehabilitation services. Referral sources are located throughout the UI Healthcare System and other hospitals in Iowa and surrounding states.

The principal training site is the historic Benton Neuropsychology Clinic, which is housed in the University of Iowa Healthcare Medical Center / Carver College of Medicine, one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States.

Current topics of interest to me include general cognitive ability, working memory, and personality. If studying any of these topics from the perspective of focal brain damage and/or intracranial electrical stimulation/recordings sounds exciting to you, please reach out!

Depending on the project, these roles will be mentored by established "heavy hitters" of our Iowa neuroscience/neuropsych community, e.g., Matt Howard (neurosurgery chair), Chris Petkov, Aaron Boes (@boeslab), and/or Dan Tranel. I can personally vouch for them all as mentors.

It's a personal goal of mine to see that Iowa remains home to one of the best, if not the best, neuropsychology research groups in world, so you can expect me to relentlessly recruit others to join us here in our never-ending pursuit of discovery, teaching, & clinical service. I can't wait to start!
markbowrenjr.bsky.social
Where else can you find one of the world's largest brain lesion registries, intracranial electrical stimulation/neuromodulation, and human single neuron recording capabilities all under one roof? Add in the historic importance of neuropsychology at Iowa, and you have a truly uniquely environment.
markbowrenjr.bsky.social
My research will continue to feature lesion-deficit mapping and intracranial electrical stimulation. Iowa is one of the few places in the world where I can combine these two lines of research thanks to unwavering support (despite notably trying times) from all those involved in my recruitment.
markbowrenjr.bsky.social
My position will be 80% research, with a primary appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and joint appointments in Neurology & Neurosurgery. I'm lucky to receive an offer from an institution that values the clinician-scientist model as much as I do, and I'll be recruiting soon to launch my lab!

A dream of mine has come true: I've accepted an offer to become a tenure-track assistant professor & clinical neuropsychologist at the University of Iowa starting this summer! I'm honored to help carry on the legacy of neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience that has been established here.

Our new preprint is up now, wherein we directly record from a relatively large population of single neurons in human insula, as well as primary auditory cortex, while intracranial participants passively listen to simple sounds (tones/clicks). doi.org/10.1101/2025... (1/5) 🧠📈🧵👇
Human insula neurons respond to simple sounds during passive listening
The insula is critical for integrating sensory information from the body with that arising from the environment. Although previous studies suggest that posterior insula is sensitive to sounds, auditor...

My manual list of neuropsychology accounts is part of the input into the feed. Let me know if anyone would like to be added! If you would like your posts to not show up on the feed, let me know that as well. You can also find this feed by simply searching for "neuropsychology" in the Bluesky feeds.
markbowrenjr.bsky.social
I created a custom Bluesky feed for anyone interested in neuropsychology! Link is below. To post to the feed, just include #neuropsych in your post (replies and reposts won't count) or ask me to add you to my neuropsychology list. Please share with anyone I missed!
