One follow-up which I would really like to see would be to have identical texts but one group on Read Like Us and another on a simpler fluency read approach as set out in @suchmo83.bsky.social's books.

Overall, although the results were better than business as usual, I didn't find them particularly impressive. I have some doubts about whether the method of reading is the most effective because a child never reads individually unless called on in the final performance.

1. More variety of texts.
2. More challenging texts.
3. Use of a structured approach to have "repeated reading" of text. (Worth noting that this was 5 "reads" - teacher model, echo read, choral read, partner choral read, performance).

Very interesting study but it seems hard to draw strong conclusions not only because of small sample size but also because there were several differences between the business as usual and the pilot program. The differences could be summarised as follows:

When fourth graders practised fluency with challenging texts rather than levelled readers, their reading rate and accuracy improved more substantially. ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

Finally, an international perspective with @natwexler.bsky.social commenting on the "Southern Surge" in the USA. Why are states like Mississippi and Louisiana improving reading scores dramatically (albeit from a low base)? There are lessons for the UK here and it isn't all about phonics...

Second, the SEND crisis in UK schools is widely known and @bennewmark.bsky.social's blogs are some of the best commentary on it. This is a short but thought-provoking blog on whether we should be looking for something "additional" for SEND children.

Ah - that was my first thought but that doesn’t really mean that it’s best city-ness has gone down or European kids still don’t want to go there….we have just foolishly chosen to make it very difficult for them.
markgoodrich.bsky.social
Why is that? Priced out? (I have to say that as a visitor, everything in London seems better these days apart from prices).

For some reason The New Statesmen is coming up as Invalid Handle for me and it’s giving me my first dose @bsky.app nostalgia.

My friend who lived there called it “Singapore in the Desert” which might be overselling it a bit. (It’s also interesting and a bit strange to me that Reform types have moved on from Singapore to Dubai).

Yes - I think it’s a mistake not to try a different job or even 2 different jobs before concluding teaching is not for you. I feel for secondary teachers in remote areas who maybe don’t have a real opportunity to change schools.

I was going to leave this story alone but this has really irritated me. First, and most importantly, I don't think you can deflect blame for this onto "digital native" culture. It's fundamentally part of the job to check out stories you see on social media before putting on national TV. BUT...

NEW: A false claim about Euan Blair found its way into Have I Got News For You.

It was from an X post seen almost 3m times - and it was wrong.

Production chief blames a "digital native" culture.

I thought this was very interesting and useful for any teacher trying to change things in their school. My only point of disagreement was with the last paragraph. I think if you are faced with a really obstructive leader, it's time to get another job!
markgoodrich.bsky.social
An excellent summary and at least the government is looking at it but it's going to be difficult to make progress.

TLDR - if the producers, host, captains or guests were active and following a decent range of accounts on Bluesky this wouldn't have happened. This doesn't excuse producers from not doing their job but it shows that if you are on X (only), your ability to spot misinformation is horribly compromised.
markgoodrich.bsky.social
Something is clearly very wrong with the information infrastructure on X these days and only those inside the bubble can't see it. As it happens, this claim was swiftly debunked on Bluesky and if you followed a decent variety of political experts, you would have seen that (I saw 2 or 3 times).
markgoodrich.bsky.social
Even if the producers weren't doing their job, the Euan Blair claim would have been swiftly and visibly debunked and they would have moved on. If it got to the show, the host, captains and guest would likely have raised it as a false claim and it would never get broadcast.

As result, I found out more things and became more knowledgeable (also went down tons of rabbit-holes). It gave me access to lots of people who were smart and experts in their fields who would often respond to polite queries. In the heyday of Twitter, there's no way this issue would have happened.
markgoodrich.bsky.social
This points to an interesting and depressing thing about social media. When Twitter got going, I went on it mainly because there was information there which wasn't easy to find in mainstream media. Of course, you had to be careful but it was easy to find trusted sources.

Toad from Wind in Willows for chaotic neutral (if that's a thing). Bombastic and veers wildly from one thing to another but isn't really evil or good.

Great to hear! I don’t think people outside the profession realise how much depends on whether you are in a good environment.
