Classical petrologist. Steelmaking, Casting, refractories in liquid process metallurgy, microscopy, microanalytics. I think the terfs are right.

I dont think actual discussions are very feasible here, but I can maybe record that I'm glad this was done by Labour. Some sense at last.

To the extent that that's true, we can hardly complain if we let them do the dirty work, that they then get power out of our dependence on it.
We really have to face ourselves here. What do we want - Not be dependent on China? Well we can have that, at a price. Mine ourselves, Refine ourselves.

Trump is a myth teller, not a good source. But maybe he is still right. In any case if he provides materials, its good.

REE are not rare and they did exist all throughout the world before China's rise. Refining, yea, of course we used to do it. It is largely our own fault that we let China get this dominance.
marsanges.bsky.social
The West believed it could just take the profit from China's cheapness. It absolutely would have had to make sure that it had at least some other supply options for REE than only China. Of course it would have cost something. That is the price of insurance.

In my business, it is a fixed rule that if you depend on something, you never have just one supplier. One may be the best, but you ALWAYS giive a little business to at least 1 second supplier, who can ramp up when something befalls your first choice. /2

She not bad! Her fangs would not be able to pierce your skin. To her you are the equivalent of an elefant :)

thats not new, that always has been the motivation for transnational groupings and alliances.
it was no different when german cities united in the 14th century to beat the feudal lords.
It requires the will to have and defend one's independence. That is what European leadership lacks today.
marsanges.bsky.social
about what? Is it known?
marsanges.bsky.social
who we ... and i would like to know exactly how this was initiated, although i dont expect it will become public. I find the matter suspicious - not bc i want sensitive technology to get to China - but there is a history of Dutch authorities rather looking to Washington than Brussels for direction.

What do you mean 'we are not supposed to think in terms of natural laws'? of course we do, and should. I must admit i\m not a philosopher though, its a long while since i have heard useful things from that side. (40 yrs to be specific)
marsanges.bsky.social
😭That thought has crossed my mind too recently
When i retire into naivety, i do it on purpose bc i still think there must be a way out.
Anyhow i have bothered u, I wish u all the best ! Greetings to fair PL

So you think, 'brave new world' is our unavoidable fate? 😪
😭
people even escaped it when once the Church could threaten them with Hell and God's Damnation
dont u think we will revolt at some point?
marsanges.bsky.social
True, it wont be unconditional though.
marsanges.bsky.social
That true too :)
so then how do we make ourselves resistant to manipulation and social media lies?
seems this is an urgent q today?

Politicians, as long as we are democracies, are the people that we send there. It is up to us to send better people if we think those at current are bad. Its dangerous to begin to distinguish between 'politicians' and 'people'.

Dragonflies are fine creatures though!

However you should acknowledge that it is specifically the scientists that have made us aware of what we are doing, ranging from Meadows in the 70s to Hansen now or @sci-ffert.bsky.social today. Precisely because of them, everyone today can, and must, know where we are at.
marsanges.bsky.social
Complicity is inherent in our bourgeois lives. Thats true. Yet again this is similarly valid for all sections of this society. As a whole, we fail, in a morally reprehensible way - most specifically on the climate - ecocide thing, where we destroy the planet for our momentary convenience.
marsanges.bsky.social
The climate scientists in particular are anything but 'silent'. I guess you know this. Of course they (we) arent any better than any other group of people. You claimed though that we were inherently bad for wanting to do our profession.
marsanges.bsky.social
Thats true ! You compared though scientists wanting to do science to two year olds and morally deficient. Thats honestly a bit insulting. I am a scientist. Artists do art. Doctors treat people. They may also engage in activism, but their mere engagement in their professions is not deficient.
marsanges.bsky.social
you cannot avoid this kind of complicity. Theres so much wrong in the world, you can never talk about it all and by your standard you cannot but become complicit in all that you dont highlight.
It is an impossible standard.
