Viola Davis's memoir is searing on this point. She and her siblings were acutely aware that they smelled. They didn't always have running water or a change of clothes and everyone knew it. And no one helped.

Comrades, I’m inclined to tell you a story from my organizing days. In 2018, I was one of hundred of union organizers who had the privilege to assist with a nine-day, statewide, unauthorized teachers’ strike to save their schools from a critical staffing shortage. Buckle up, it’s a good one. 1/x

I love ginger in baked goods and really wish gingerbread was still a year-round thing, as it was in the past.

This recipe reminds me of done amazingly dense cookie slabs I used to get at camp and have never seen anywhere else. No idea what they were called, which doesn't help.

Oh, I said, Grand Central was 2 stops ago. Sorry, if I'd been eavesdropping sooner, I would have told you when to get off.

They laughed.

I explained that if they stayed on the train, it would take them back.

"We don't have to change?"

Nope.

Heading to NYCC yesterday, 3 nicely dressed women got on the 7 in Queens & sat near me. I was reading so did not pay much attention.

As we pulled out of Times Square, I packed away my magazine & glasses as 1 woman said, "we just get off at Grand Central."

Yeah, I have simple tastes and a tiny budget.

Whitefish salad absolutely needs to be eaten on pumpernickel or rye or even a good brown bread. Something with flavor.

Lox is too expensive for me these days, but when I could afford it, I'd have that instead of the tomato.

Poppy seed or onion (if the onions aren't burnt little flavorless nubs), scallion cream cheese, sliced tomato.

I got it, but it was a half-guess on my part.

This is me. I always ask for simple, practical things, when I ask for anything. People laugh at me.

Oh goodness, I just read that novel! The cookbook was a striking detail.

May her memory be a blessing.

Met some of my dearest friends that way, many of whom I have had the joy of seeing irl once or twice.

Reconnected with a significant number of the women I knew in HS & made new friendships there.
