Jan. 2010 - SCOTUS rules 5-4 in Citizens United vs. FEC, declaring Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 unconstitutional

May 2010 - Brazil passed the “Lei da Ficha Limpa”, barring anyone who’s been impeached or convicted of a crime by a superior court for running for office for 8 years

For one of my final stories with @wired.com, I teamed up with @peggylowe.bsky.social at KCUR to dig through a Kansas City, KS police hack

Inside were some of the most disturbing misconduct files I’ve ever read—and a secret list of cops the department said couldnt be trusted

Here are a few of them:

“Bandido tem direito a ser julgado e receber a pena proporcional a seu crime. Quem julgou esses bandidos cumpriu ali mesmo a pena de morte vedada na Constituição. Assim são rasgadas todas as garantias que lhes assegura o Estado de Direito.” (José Sarney, ex-presidente do Brasil)
in case nobody’s noticed we’ve also killed local media
This is the sound of candidates losing the struggle against the crushing weight of partisan gravity.

This is nationalization and polarization and presidentialization swallowing everything else.

This is the dangerous collapse of dimensionality, in one chart

the Global Right is a murder cult. period point blank end of story. and that should frame every tangentially political conversation we have with our loved ones, neighbors, coworkers
NPR really copying police reports verbatim from other countries???

>130 civilians are dead. After Rio state officials - who conducted this operation with zero notice to or support from the federal gov’t - announced their death toll, residents piled up 70 more bodies in a neighborhood square.

The number of dead has now risen to 128 in the deadliest every police operation/assault in Rio's history. Even for a city under the kosh of drug traffickers and accustomed to indiscriminate police violence, the numbers are stunning.

guess the secret’s out now, but Like A Tattoo was extremely popular on TikTok a couple years ago (and had been extremely influential in vaporwave circles before then)

anyway it spawned this amongst the kids

Zohran Mamdani caught lying that he understood Plato’s allegory of the cave, yet when asked to explain it, he seemed to instead explain Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation where reality has been replaced by symbols and signs, which seems similar to Plato’s theory but is not the same
Having said all of that, he’s got a year to atone for it and not fuck it up. It’s not impossible.
It seems like there’s some amount of people (Ryan Grim, anyway) who are actively dismissive of it. And even if I believe the guy’s not Fetterman… is a vocally pro-Palestine guy with (or known to have had…) a Nazi tattoo *really* a good idea at this moment?
woof, my bad, yeah I meant her. do not need more 80 year olds in the Senate. but against the “accidental Nazi tat” guy
for one, it’s Susan Collins, I wouldn’t call it an enviable choice. also, it’s still fairly short notice for the news to have broken containment offline and have been polled.
and, of course, himself
gut check is he’s purely making shit up or has seen <5 edgy posters
