Not as glamorous as #BlueCarbon ecosystems, the humble #sediments on the #seafloor off Norway accumulate and store a lot of organic #carbon.

Link to the paper: t.co/ZFXkokTmR5

We are now assessing the potential impacts of mobile bottom fishing on vulnerable organic carbon stocks.
Organic carbon accumulation rates of the geomorphological units shallow shelf, deep shelf, glacial trough, slope and abyss. The left figure shows mean organic carbon accumulation rates averaged over the five morphological units. Vertical lines indicate one standard deviation. The rates are highest in glacial troughs. The right figure shows the organic carbon sink sizes. About half the accumulation of organic carbon is occuring in glacial troughs. The total accumulation of organic carbon is 6 teragram per year. Organic carbon stocks in surface sediments of the geomorphological units shallow shelf, deep shelf, glacial trough, slope and abyss. The left figure shows mean organic carbon stocks averaged over the five morphological units. Vertical lines indicate one standard deviation. The right figure shows organic carbon reservoir sizes of the five geomorphological units. Reservoir sizes are highest in glacial troughs. In total, the surface sediments of the Norwegian continental margin store 814 teragram of organic carbon.

Hvis jeg forstår det riktig gjelder endringen bare korallrev i norske territorialfarvann (opp til 12 nautiske mil fra grunnlinjen), men ikke utenfor.

We have a new estimate on how much organic carbon is buried in continental margin sediments globally.

If you are interested, come and see me on Monday, 28 Apr, 08:30–10:15 in Hall X1, Poster X1.31.

Our new article out in Science Advances today! 🌊 In Europe we have protected 1% of our deep-sea biodiversity from bottom-contact fishing, but our analysis revealed that 3,500 hours of fishing still occurred within these protected areas. www.science.org/doi/full/10....

Can we please stop using nm as a shorthand for nautical mile, as it really stands for nanometre, a distance substantially shorter than a nautical mile.😏

🌊 New study on the impacts of bottom trawling on organic #carbon in seabed sediments.

-Intense trawling has led to suppressed organic carbon stocks in some parts of the North Sea

-Recovery of stocks would take several decades

However, also a fair bit of criticism:

CDRmare expert Klaus Wallmann is not only working on CCS. The geologist from @geomarkiel.bsky.social was also involved in a new study investigating how bottom trawling influences long-term carbon storage in shelf sea sediments. Read the open-access paper here: lnkd.in/eAgq7gum

We did a desktop study 11 years ago on the relative impact of fishing disturbance versus natural disturbance by waves and currents. We found that the impact of fishing is likely highest in muddy substrates and deep circalittoral habitats. I guess Georges Bank has neither.
