Part 5 is weird. I think we're supposed to take Tommy Jarvis' trauma seriously. But at the same time, the film has more farcical characters than a French comedy from the 70s. I half expected Louis de Funès to show up.
The kills were boring, but the oddness of it all kept me watching.

Yeah, I think it was designed to cause conflicting emotions. I remember being really uncomfortable in the theatre.

Conventional wisdom is correct. Part 4 is a fun one. All the kills and makeup effects are great, I was never bored in between the kills, and the characters were actually... likeable?
I mean, nobody has great arcs or anything; it's still trash. But fun trash. This is the first one I'd watch again.

Part 3 so far is pure, uncut garbage. Apparently, it was in 3D originally. So it looks like shit, and people keep dangling things at the camera all the time. I dread to continue it tonight.

I have made it to the middle of Pt 3 last night. Honestly, the first 2 were a bit boring. Some gratifying kills, the novelty of baby Kevin Bacon, and Betsy Palmer is wonderfully insane as Jason's mum, but both films have long stretches of nothing in between the entertaining bits.
