Sometimes I remember worrying that I was embarrassing when I started sharing my fanart. I fell so hard & so fast for our pirates. Then a pro comic artist I really look up to just out of the blue told me my OFMD stuff was "beautiful work". It was like he knew I needed to hear it right at that moment.

Of course! Some of the other pumpkin carvers like to gut first so they can carve w/a light inside to see how it’ll turn out in real time, but I’m too short to reach the table properly, so I just keep the ungutted pumpkin in my lap while I carve 😂 Everyone’s got their own favorite techniques & tools!

With the right tools, it’s honestly a lot easier than it looks to get started! I definitely feel like I’ve improved over time, but my first pumpkin last year was still mostly okay 😂💜

We’re kind of at the mercy of whichever pumpkins we get sent, but the less dense, smoother skinned pumpkins are the easiest to carve. I think if a pumpkin is ripe enough to pick, it’s fine for carving, but if the skin feels extra tough, that’s definitely more challenging. These are great questions!

No worries!! The illustrators use a printout and transfer paper to get the outlines before filling the rest in with sharpie and ballpoint pen. Then I use a Speedball linoleum cutter for most of it and finish with some pottery loop tools to smooth things out before gutting it and doing final touchups

They split up the jobs this year for the illustrators and carvers and the illustrators are seriously CRUSHING ITTTT. The rest is just a Speedball linoleum cutter, various pottery tools, and steady hands 😂💜

Had a stark revelation when I did this last year that because I am getting paid to do this, I LITERALLY am a pro pumpkin carver?? Which is weird to think about, but also very neat?? 😂💜
