🧵 1/4 I'm very happy to share this comprehensive review paper covering atmospheric rivers in Antarctica. It was an idea that started during a workshop in Boulder back in summer 2023 and now is finally published thanks to an amazing team effort rdcu.be/d9nFY.
Atmospheric rivers in Antarctica
Nature Reviews Earth & Environment - Atmospheric rivers provide the majority of water vapour transport to the high latitudes. This Review summarizes Antarctic atmospheric river dynamics and...

Fantastic paper out today that shows rainfall in Antarctica is an under-observed and under-appreciated risk to ice-sheet stability

📝NEW paper out today🥳

❄️We look at extreme snow and rain (yes, rain!) in West Antarctica over the Thwaites and Pine Island ice shelves.

In it, we show that atmospheric rivers - long, thin "rivers in the sky" that bring tons of heat & moisture - deliver huge amounts of snow... and even rain 🌧️

Exciting new research on Antarctic atmospheric rivers that, among many things, confirms that sea-ice acts as a buffer weakening atmospheric rivers before they make landfall. Disappearing sea ice will mean stronger atmospheric rivers in the future. #antarctica #meteorology
Vertical structure and surface impact of atmospheric rivers reaching antarctic sea ice and land
Recent extremes in Antarctic temperature, surface melt and sea ice loss have been robustly linked to the occurrence of atmospheric rivers (ARs). Howev…
