Okay then I guess he was over with the safeties making sure the SS isn't going to bust again next time they have him feint like he's deep middle third then scream down to get the curl-flat zone as they pressure off the edge.

Eh no.
mgoseth.bsky.social
Well maybe they would have but they were busy talking to the linebackers about setting an edge on power runs LOL NOPE AGAIN
mgoseth.bsky.social
Okay, 4th quarter, game's still in reach. Let's check in to see if Michigan's adjusted USC's 12 personnel going 4-wide to take advantage of Wink's 5-man pressures from 5-2 LOL NOPE.
mgoseth.bsky.social
Uncalled block in the back on #85 wipes out Sullivan and turns this into a massive gainer but this also demonstrates how Wink's shit isn't well-coached. Pinch with Hausmann replacing on the edge. Who's supposed to react to the pull here? Etta?
mgoseth.bsky.social
Regarding the officiating, I thought the non-OPI and OPI were both legit calls. What I'm livid about was they let USC get away with a lot of personal fouls after the play, including this bullshit when Bryce got up limping.
mgoseth.bsky.social
They have their "Racecar" personnel trapped on the field after the 3rd & 26 (call timeout maybe?) but that's no excuse for this. Barham still trying to out-athlete the edge but Rolder...why is Rolder looking for someone to spill to? Why are we playing to spill? If it's Hillman, whoa.
mgoseth.bsky.social
Here's the 3rd & 26 they converted. Hillman is going to get a -3 for whiffing his tackle without slowing or pushing to Rod. But Rolder tried to go inside of a TE when you can bleed 15 yards and still get 4th & 11. I think it's worth a -2.
mgoseth.bsky.social
Rolder had a rough game. He's at issue the first time they couldn't fit power, coming up inside this TE. Since when do we play this to spill? Hausmann seems surprised at the angle. Hold onto this because Rolder will be relevant twice when the game slips away.

Another example of the disconnect between playcalling and players. Wink loves his fire pressures from 5-2, but tight ends are receivers, and Michigan's LBs (Rolder's eyes are wrong) aren't coached to take away Read 1, so Maiva can Throw into the Blitz.

Another 5-2 thing: This split flow read's timing was thrown off enough by a bobbled snap that a DE might close it down, but the 5-2 makes Benny into that DE and he isn't one. Plays it as well as a DT should; I've seen D-Mo/McGregor/MikeMo TFL this.

Last week I said they were probably over-rotating because it was just Wisconsin and there's a big road game coming up but I bet the starters stay in at USC.

It's 4:02 in the 1st Q and front seven is Nichols, Ike, Williams, Etta, Brandt, Sullivan, and Bowles.

So like, we're committed to 5-2 vs 12 personnel, but also we don't practice it enough to not blow it.
mgoseth.bsky.social
I'm so confused and so is Hillman. They're telling him to back into a middle 3rd, he's like "Yeah but we have two WRs to the field from Empty don't you think...?" Only way I can imagine this working is if Hillman was supposed to bait high and hammer to a C/F and got the rotation backwards.
mgoseth.bsky.social
UNGH. After the 4th & 1, another RPS-2 screen for Wink's 5-2 vs 12 personnel, this time a tunnel. It's so easy.

(Also the TE moved about as much as Klein did later).
mgoseth.bsky.social
Sometimes what looks like Wink making it too easy to throw into the blitz is on the players. I think Hausmann's getting a -2 on this: -1 for tackle, -1 bc the whole point of this call is get MLB anticipating this slant.

But it's a Wink thing too: if your players can't close a trap there's no point.
mgoseth.bsky.social
I'm up with a full copy of the game and what I'm seeing is very bad. First snap of 12 pers vs 5-2 is everything we feared. Riley has an angle screen from spread to put his best player in space; Wink has three DTs pursuing.
mgoseth.bsky.social
Uh, yeah. I've barely gotten to watch most of it (see: was at a Bar Mitzvah) but I'm scared to now. We asked Sam this week if they're spilling or setting an edge, and Sam said coaches told him it "depends on the call." Heretofore the basis of the defense is they set an edge. If they've lost that,

They can’t fit gap and they don’t know how to play Tampa and they played 3-4 vs 12, things we’ve been complaining about since OU.

I don't know what I'm going to see on the film but from watching on a small screen at a bar mitzvah tonight i didn't really see Wink as the problem? USC explosives on great catches and a third and 27 when nobody tackled.

Marshall was read 1 but McCulley is #1.
mgoseth.bsky.social
This is not a new thought. Note: the state has a rule that allows you to finish your degree at another public in-state university so Michigan's typical admission snafus with non-grad or freshman transfers don't apply.

Would Oregon State take him back or does he need to go on a Rich Rodriguez vision quest first?
