Detroit is getting smarter about safety by including non-police strategies like Community Violence Intervention alongside police spending, and seeing lower violence as a result. https://michiganchronicle.com/detroits-cvi-movement-and-law-enforcement-partnerships-fuel-record-crime-decline/

And while we're at it, let's extend the same protections to survivors of domestic violence & sexual assault

Yes, being a survivor of trafficking should be a mitigating factor in sentencing, expungement. It should also allow for after-the-fact resentencing if not considered in initial case. https://home.mirs.news/post/anti-human-trafficking-bills-focus-on-demand-side

Powerful reporting by Kara Berg at the Detroit news.
When cops are commit domestic abuse the harms ripple throughout the community.

What's in the state budget for ending mass incarceration? Our members talk about the good, the bad, the ugly. What's your take?

Sad that we even have to fight for janitorial supplies for prison health clinics. Glad #MiLeg actually funded them.

🚨MDOC needs to modify their strip search policy to be less intrusive.

To make the most of this win the next battle will be to make sure that impacted community voices are part of the review process—something the MDOC has rarely (ever?) done well.
micemi.bsky.social
This is a good change. MDOC had tried to limit legislative oversight by requiring 72 hour notice before a legislative visit. Legislature clapped back & said "let us in."

Now it's on us to make sure they use that oversight capacity.

Our members have a list of notes on how parole could be run better, but cuts to the parole board do nothing for public safety, fiscal accountability.
micemi.bsky.social
Reductions to parole board funding? Like they say in recover, let's play the tape out.

The parole board needs to have the resources to get their decisions right: too strict and lives and $ is wasted w/ unneeded incarceration; to loose & there's a risk to community.
micemi.bsky.social
yep, cuts the reentry funds for community partners 😡
We need to separate support from supervision, the community partners provide trust and support no parole officer can. They should be funded, not cut.

If they aren't getting enough food at chow, don't have fam putting $ on their account, and they can't make enough at prison wages, what's the alternative? Theft of hustle.

Hangry prisoners + the need to turn to illicit activities to get 🥗 = less rehabilitation, more violence
micemi.bsky.social
Here's another big one:
* Cuts to prison food aren't as bad as we feared, but food in there is already s***. Folks can't focus on rehabilitation when they are hangry!
micemi.bsky.social
confession time, the programs cut (Flip the Script, Public Safety Initiative, Residential alternative to Prison) aren't ones we hear about much from our members. What do you think about these cuts?
micemi.bsky.social
cutting the copay assistance is penny wise, pound foolish

4. The $5 copays for prison healthcare = 1 week's pay @ prison wages. $.5M to eliminate these copays would mean fewer people delay care, more disease detected early, lower total cost of care, and more returning citizens who are healthy enough to work.
