I like how the new edition of Bottle Imp handles this. The points are a little hard to read, but I feel more clarity would cut too hard into the gameplay and risk confusion with the ranks.

Really great layers of uncertainty that play like press your luck and can be mitigated a bit (but not perfectly!) by card counting. It’s both strategic and very dramatic and funny. I ‘popped off’ at the end of the last round.
