aaauuugggghhhhh hurry up and write FASTER i need this OUT of me. sneak peek preview of what i've been working on for Way Too Long so that i can use it to whip my motivation into shape.

Excerpt from an Ace Attorney fanfic:

“Relation to patient?” the receptionist sighs, in that bored, matter-of-fact, ‘Gee, you must be stupid if you think I’m going to let you do that’ sort of tone. Naturally. I should have known better than to think it would be as easy as striding forward and declaring I was here for Phoenix Wright in my brassiest, most no-nonsense cadence. Nonsense is about to abound. Oh joy.

With a, frankly speaking, gruesomely detestable heave of exasperation from the depths of my lungs—which is still the best I could have done without outright shrieking like the toddler I vaguely feel I am at this point—I tell her, between gritted teeth, “Friend. Colleague. Interested party who has just flown transcontinental for an urgent health update.”

Clicking her tongue haughtily at me, she pores over some document for what feels deliberately longer than necessary. Truly, it reassures me beyond belief to know how highly this institution seems to value efficiency and service. The exacting, vindictive voice that still lives in me sneers, If anything has happened to Wright, I’ll make them regret their whole wretched operation. I’ll arrange for an investigation of the finest grain into their practices. I’ll have every employee audited to my own personal satisfaction. I’ll build a case against every damn doctor of his for wrongful death—

No. No, no, no. I can’t accept that. Not yet. Not ‘til the very moment I see it with my own doubting eyes. I can’t. I just can’t. Out of so many formidable proficiencies and capabilities, one thing Miles Edgeworth cannot do is accept the death of Phoenix Wright. Not without perfect evidence. I know better than to demand that in the court any longer, but here… here, in this unknown realm, I suppose old habits are the only strength I have left.

You Bring the Fight, and I'll Bring the Law! by yumenopen. Summary:

“Okay, let’s begin. First question: why are you hiring for this position?”

“Um… huh?” Those strangely jagged eyebrows tilt up, as if I’d just requested some rarefied bit of trivia with a five-second countdown timer. I merely quirk mine back at him and hold fast; this should be a simple question. If it’s not, I really must accept that I am wasting my time. Clearly taking a cue from my pointed silence, he bites his lip in thought. “W-well, I guess, uh… it was kinda Maya’s idea?” He shrugs helplessly in her direction, to which she retorts with a light, tossing roll of her eyes, as if to say, ‘You’re on your own for this, buddy.’

Phoenix decides it might make sense if he hired someone with the ability to actually decipher all the law books lying around the office. Ives Gardner decides it might make sense if he accepts a job with a famous defense attorney. Maya decides things are about to get a lot more fun around the Wright & Co. Law Offices.

It's October 11th, 2025, the 33rd birthday of Phoenix Wright. After the long, cold stillness of the past few years has passed like a shadow over him without remark, Ives Gardner decides that he needs to take a risk. Doesn't everyone deserve a nice cake on their birthday? He's not sure if prickly, aloof Phoenix will allow it, but at least he can say he tried.

Blind Justice and Her Daggered Edge by demienbyworth. Summary: Phoenix Wright is a new lawyer, still bright-eyed and full of invigorated hope for all the raw potential he has to bring justice into the world. Or... at least, he ought to be, right? He's only defended for two cases and, already, he can feel the drive to move forward dying mid-sputter. It doesn't help that the way his debut played out had nothing in common with what he'd envisioned. He's won his verdicts by the skin of his teeth, he's flying blind without a mentor, and he nearly got convicted himself. Where exactly is he meant to go from there? This question gnaws away at the rope suspension of his mind until it snaps.

A Biography of Phoenix Wright by demienbyworth. Summary: Ives Gardner has worked for the Wright and Co. Law Offices as a paralegal for a few years. Well, he did back when it was called the Wright and Co. Law Offices. Now he's "employed" at the Wright Talent Agency to babysit Trucy Wright and run odd jobs for the boss. Things have taken quite the turn, haven't they? Frustrated and aghast at what he's watching Phoenix Wright turn into in the wake of disbarment, Ives does the only thing he knows how to do: write an excruciating, meticulous breakdown of every beat of Phoenix's life leading up to this point. What will he discover about the man's internal landscape along the way?

A Dance with Losing It All by demienbyworth. Summary: "Say, Miles,” he murmurs into my ear. “Wanna take things to the bedroom?”

I freeze. Oh. That is where things have been heading, isn’t it? All this intimacy finally exchanged between us — of course he’s dying to consummate our relationship. And I want him too, god, do I want him. It’s just that [...] I would want him to— I shudder, unable to give voice to what it is I want him to do, even inside the privacy of my own mind. Desire clashes with fear once again, and no fear deeper than this secret I clutch in obscuring darkness. Even the dim lights of this room seem to needle into me too brightly and hotly, with me tugging my suddenly constrictive neckerchief off to no avail. What do I say? What do I do? The only way out of this vortex that I can see is to say the words that keep dying in my mouth.

After a terrible karaoke night and an important dinner, Miles and Phoenix spend their first night together as a couple rather than a pair of constipated fools. Vulnerability ensues.

Phoenix Wright's No Good Very Bad Karaoke Night by demienbyworth. Summary: Phoenix just got disbarred, and he's pretty sure things don't get worse than this. As soon as he hears the news, he can already start to feel himself slipping into a depression. What could the antidote possibly be? No, not therapy, better: a karaoke night with his friends! Nothing will go wrong and everything will be fine. And he can definitely hide everything from one Miles Edgeworth.

This story follows on from the events that transpire between Gumshoe and Edgeworth in Bitter Misunderstandings. Reading it is not required, but may enhance enjoyment of this work.
