"How he grew, changed, strengthened, and broke the position has, more than any other so far, charted the course for our future. For those who think they know how this story ends, you have to go back to the beginning, to a small city on the shores of Lake Ontario."

"When a person invents a story about how he broke the rules, when in fact he didn’t, what does that tell us about how he might treat the most powerful political position in the known galaxy?"

Great question: 3rd prez T’Maran is Vulcan. She was actually at the San Francisco Conference, as the Peace Minister of the Confederacy of Vulcan. She’s most in the text in Ch. 7, near the end “She Speaks.”

4th president is Andorian shen, and comes from beta novels

"As a reluctant celebrity, he could see that it was a source of both political and personal power that was not being tapped. It would not stay untapped for long."

"I felt I had been making it my entire adult life until that point, but then I learned. I could give more. When I woke up to Jhamel ‘s coffee brewing and Shran singing some tune he’d learned from our earlier night of karaoke, it finally came to me. Do more."

It’s clear why I insisted @pjlusk.bsky.social be in the LAST FOUNDER working group.

One thing I don't think many people realise about writing is how much time you spend updating tables to keep track of various aspects of what you're writing about. And I, a historian, am not designed for using and maintaining spreadsheets.

There's a decent crowd people on this site who love @eomproject.bsky.social and @goldwagnathan.bsky.social's sci-fi history stuff: you should all head over *immediately* to nascentnovice.com not just to read SAN FRANCISCO 2161, but to get a head start on his follow-up: THE LAST FOUNDER!

I think I just cracked the "what are Archer's personal relationships" knot. It's developed from his Enterprise character, but also trying to do something new to the way the Captains™️ are usually treated. Very exciting night.

Anyway, the Introduction to LAST FOUNDER will be up in the morning.

Truly my favorite implication of Enterprise: a century of Romulans pretending to be Vulcans and Vulcans pretending to be Romulans, while everyone else in the Federation is blithely unaware.

A "The Americans" show called "The Vulcans" when?

Let’s journey to the Babel conference and talk about Romulans in Enterprise. Episode out now!

Starting Oct. 12th (his birthday), we will be posting new chapters of THE LAST FOUNDER: The Presidency of Jonathan Archer every 2-3 weeks.

These will explore the most consequential presidency of the first century of the Federation and discuss how fundamentally things changed from 2185 to 2192.

Every fall, we watch all the good Halloween sitcom episodes and every year I am reminded:

“Halloween” S5: E3 of Fraiser has a 10 good jokes per minute average and is one of the finest episodes of comedy ever made.

I do; i reread Lord of the Rings about once every two years.

But my comfort read is the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough. Just so readable; pick it up and put it down at any point in the story. There’s always one in the bedside table in case I need it.

It will be somewhat clear when they show up in the text; I’m happy to be shameless taking a good character.

And don’t tell the other Americans; that show is still a bit unknown over here.
nascentnovice.bsky.social
Many of them are miniseries or only 2-3 seasons; I’d suggest them if you can find them on streaming you have access to

And I wish I could say it will be as funny as Veep, but I can't make that promise.

There are some TV shows that I quite like, and are useful in informing the politics of the early Federation:

- Borgen
- The Diplomat
- The Americans
- Jack & Bobby
- House of Cards
- John Adams
- Yes, Minister
- Churchill: The Wilderness Years
- Servant of the People
- Show Me A Hero
