This was the first one I ever owned on VHS. Always been one of my favorites.

The first act of PUPPET MASTER 5 is just a Blade hangout flick, which is like my dream movie.

Everyone gets a convoluted sticking point like this and mine is: even if you ignore FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH as a concept, Freddy's (real) glove is in the cabin in EVIL DEAD 2, Necronomicon is in JASON GOES TO HELL, connected to ELM ST., but EVIL DEAD is playing on the TV in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

In Scream they talk about the movie Halloween but in Halloween H20 they're watching Scream 2 so... What is reality?

I should also add that the cereal boxes were actually games. We had kids dig through the "cereal" inside (packing peanuts) to find prizes, which were color-changing spoons. (We also had a huge bowl of candy, we're not monsters, it's just not pictured)

Just got back from Trunk or Treat. We're part of a balanced breakfast this year. I drew/inked FrankenBerry, Count Chocula, the backdrop & the gravestone inscriptions by hand, and my wife drew Boo Berry and painted everything. Cereal boxes had prizes inside for kids to dig for. Color changing spoons!

HOUSE OF DRACULA was actually the one I was watching when I posted this. I still would've kept Dracula around longer, but it's an underrated one for sure.

One of my favorite behind-the-scenes anecdotes ever is Muschietti going up to Bill Skarsgard on the set of IT and telling him "We're gonna do a little fucked up CGI thing with your eye" and Skarsgard saying "Oh I can literally just do that." Astounding coincidence. The Turtle was with 'em that day.

Not to side with Purcell in CANDYMAN but it actually *is* a bad look when you tell someone you're gonna bury his work on an urban legend and then he asks if you've heard the legend you're writing about, and you say "No."

What do you do to get canceled by Mel Gibson?

Jim Caveizal will no longer return as Jesus in ‘THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST’ sequels.

They are currently looking for someone to fill the role.

Writing about MASTERS OF HORROR today had me remembering the awful early '00s period where the opinion that the masters of the '70s/'80s were washed up geezers who either lost it or never had it was one you'd encounter on forums almost every day. MASTERS OF HORROR almost singlehandedly changed that.

I know it was all late, "out of ideas" era Universal, but all of the classic Universal crossover films make for such great October viewing. Each of the monsters just stopping by and hanging out in each other's movies. We gotta love it.

Aside from the obvious "How it started/how it's going" it's so on brand for the deeply iconoclastic Taylor Momsen, usually so embracive of her goth rock image to the point that she literally released a song called "For I Am Death" less than 2 months ago, to drop a Christmas album on Halloween day.

Today's post. I had a blast revisiting MASTERS OF HORROR, an utterly unique anthology in that it wasn't quite an anthology series and wasn't quite a DTV label but was also a combination of both, and reflecting on my personal favorite episodes/films. nbrehmer.medium.com/their-wildes...
Their Wildest Dreams, Your Worst Nightmares: Revisiting ‘Masters of Horror’
I cannot put into words just how much of an influence Masters of Horror had on me as a teenager who was starting to get serious about…

Stop making a movie better by adding "John Carpenter's" to the beginning and make a movie worse by adding the narration from CHILDREN OF THE CORN.
natbrehmer.bsky.social
CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT is like putting RETURN TO SALEM'S LOT and SUBSPECIES in a blender, with a dash of HOWLING VI: THE FREAKS and just a pinch of RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3 for flavor. That might not sound like much to some, but all of those movies are at the core of my being.

Did you know that Fangoria released a horror movie in the 90s in which a vampire is let loose from an underwater crypt, creating a wave of vamps who sleep submerged in water with their lungs floating outside their body? It's called CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT, starring Karen Black (on Tubi).

I will never not think it's the coolest thing in the world that these two long-gestating passion projects from visionary directors not only escaped Development Hell but wound up being released within a year of one another.

The bewildered nurse at the beginning of CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS is the best indicator early on that this cult is just the Smith's Grove staff. She is so clearly a new hire who suddenly found herself at a ritual sacrifice. Huge "I just fucking work here" energy.

Continuing to try to do a post for every day of October, and for today's essay I finally wrote about my favorite Guillermo del Toro film, THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE. A beautifully somber deconstructive ghost story about all the different ways to feel frozen in time. nbrehmer.medium.com/an-insect-tr...
An Insect Trapped in Amber: The Haunted Empathy of ‘The Devil’s Backbone’
I first discovered this movie, as I’m sure many others did, during Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments in 2004. That introduced me to a lot…

All three versions of NOSFERATU absolutely master the depiction of the long, perilous journey to the castle, just to get there, take one look at the guy and go "oh shit oh fuck"
natbrehmer.bsky.social
Embry is deeply unsettling in it, not in an over-the-top scary way but (and I hate to say this given the circumstances of the episode) a very believable "guy you might actually run into on the street" kind of way.
