This is pure curiosity yk? When you start a story, do you place the readers in the immediate beginning? How do you bring the reader to the 'rising action'? Why?

Very random thought on writing: how do y'all approach linearity of a story? I've mostly come to terms with the fact that I work best with a non-linear storyline: multiple concurrent time periods, a memory in the midst of an ongoing scene, etc. I figure others would have a diff approach.
