I have been trying to make time for pottery alongside my PhD. I did my first official market last weekend at the Bowhouse. I was very nervous before but it was so lovely to speak to so many people about my work! I have added a few leftover pieces to my new website the-puffins-burrow.sumupstore.com 🐧

Just found an absolutely stonking male Collared Flycatcher at Creachan, a species I've been dreaming of finding for years! This is the first for Barra and the third for the Outer Hebrides. #BirdingScotland #RareBirdsUK

Seabirds 2025 are go!

Yesterday the Puffin army returned, creeping closer and closer which allowed us to do a whole-island count. A staggering 13,174 were counted rafting, the highest number since 1934! Today, they made their first 2025 landfall, two days earlier than the 2013-2024 first birds ashore mean. Welcome home!

An unforgettable morning finding 4 rouzels only an hour from our house

Out looking for wintering Ring Ouzels in an area I'd never visited before in Gredos. Pretty much exclusively juniper and rock. A very cool landscape, and we managed to see 4 ringos!

A day of contrasts. Several flocks of wintering Cranes starting their northward migration whilst the first Swallows and Subalpine Warblers are already here in Extremadura. A delicious 18°C compared to the miserable 4° when I left Aberdeen. And everything is already singing!

Empezando con un basto graznido hace unos 60 millones de años, las vocalizaciones de las aves se han desarrollado hasta el sinfín de composiciones musicales que vamos a oír y disfrutar en los próximos meses. ¿Cómo? ¿Por qué?

It's been a quiet winter for Short-eared Owls in Orkney, perhaps unsurprising after such poor autumn passage through
@fairislebirdobs.bsky.social. Extra special then to bump into a roadside group of three birds - hunting, chasing and occasionally bickering with a passing Hen Harrier

We found this lovely Common Scoter on the beach yesterday, wet and unable to fly after the storm. After a night of rest and food at home, it was very lively and ready to go this morning, flying out to sea straight away! Can I count it for the house list?

And the more usual current situation with Ptarmigan, in Ruadh Stac Mòr, Ceann Loch Iù. White patches of lichen on the rocks providing a bit of camouflage with the lack of snow! #BirdingScotland #highlandbirds

One of those dreamy winter days. Not a breath of wind, a maximum temperature of -7C°, and great quantities of snow and ice at Glen Tanar today ❄️❄️

A gorgeous start to 2025, hopefully a good omen for the year ❄️

Any day you see Ptarmigan is a great day. Even more so when they are so close you can film them with your phone! #ukbirding #birds

Staying at a lodge in Perthshire for the week and I was very surprised to see 4 Whooper Swans in the small pool alongside a male Mandarin!

A well-timed visit to the Loons this morning resulted in another brief view of the Bittern that’s currently in residence, as it crept across an open channel in the reeds #OrkneyBirds

2024 biodiversity indicators are in... If a wake-up call was needed to show the UK is failing nature, this is it.

Short-term trends show progress stalling or reversing. 📉🚨

To meet 2030 targets, we need nature-friendly farming, smart planning &investment in nature now
