all personal theory and speculation of course, but he has lived through so many centuries; most of them without heated homes or modern medicine. I believe that he has been plotting on Bram’s immortal lifespan for centuries so that he doesn’t have to grow sick again.

The fact that he looks this healthy and lively (Running with swords! Swords are heavy!) after resurrecting just further cements my belief that he takes life spans with the bodies he subsumes. He doesn’t have the lines and darkness under his eyes that he has always had. #bsd121

I feel that his ability may fall on whomever is most responsible/closest to responsible in his death so if he drowned in Mersault, he could have subsumed Chuuya. His ability wouldn’t work on Dazai, but Chuuya was an accessory and the next responsible person.

I also theorize that he takes the life spans of whomever he subsumes. When he nears the end of it, his health declines and he needs to get killed to begin a new life cycle.
This is another reason he needed Bram in the place that he was.
