Repost: David Rice I am a 71-year-old white guy. I currently live in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago, a community that is 50% Latinx. My building is right next-door to a Muslim American community center, down the street from a local mosque, and within a few blocks of at least two synagogues, one of them orthodox. I feel totally safe and I’m surrounded by some of the nicest people I’ve ever known. When I bought my place here in the city a few months ago and announced my move, I was flabbergasted by the number of friends who reached out to me, saying they were “concerned for my safety.” What in the actual hell do they really know about Chicago? Apparently nothing. Prior to moving into the city, I lived for 37 years in the suburb of Clarendon Hills, a community that is 80-90% white. Before I moved into the city a few months ago, I had spent 47 years driving into Chicago to work in the theaters or just to go see theatre. I averaged at least 100 trips into the city a year, almost always in the evening, coming home after 10 PM. I have worked at and or attended shows at theatres on the north side, the northwest side, the near north, the loop, the west side, and the south side. In short, I have been all over the city. Back in the 80s, I will admit that there were times I felt a little bit nervous when I got out of a show after 10 o’clock and had to walk back to my car. This is especially true when I worked at a theater near Wrigley Field in the 80’s. Yep, back when the Cubs weren’t playing night games, that could be a pretty sketchy neighborhood at night. Know how many times I’ve been mugged? Zero Know how many shootings or assaults I’ve witnessed? Zero Know how many great people of all ethnicities I have encountered? Too many to count, but certainly in the upper hundreds, if not, thousands. I have, however, known two murderers. The first was James Free. He graduated with me from Glenbard West H.S. in Glen Ellyn, a suburb that was over 95% white when he committed a murder there in 1978. The second was Neil Lofquist, who murdered his eight-year-old daughter in March 2006, having sexually assaulted her multiple times in the previous weeks. Neil lived in a house almost directly behind mine in Clarendon Hills. I have also known a half a dozen young girls who were physically or sexually assaulted by family members or boyfriends. All of them were students of mine at Morris Community High School, where I taught for 17 years. Morris is about 50 miles west of Chicago, a nice “safe” rural community. These behaviors never made me feel unsafe in those communities. All of this is simply to say that I don’t care where you go, you will be surrounded predominantly by really great people. But wherever you go, there are also going to be some sick and evil people. You think you live in a community totally free from this kind of maliciousness? You are living in fantasy land. Remember, almost ever mass killing at a school has occurred in suburban or rural schools. I am not going to deny that there aren’t impoverished neighborhoods in Chicago that I would not choose to visit at night. But there were people in Morris that I would not have chosen to hang out with at night, either. And there were former students I knew at Morris who were arrested for distributing some pretty serious drugs. I doubt they were Tren de Aragua… unless that gang has a Scandinavian branch I’ve not read about. Do you know the one place I’ve been where I and my entire family felt we were in danger? Central Mississippi. The truckstop we took a break at in 2015 was redolent with a sense of malevolence I have never experienced before or since…and there was no one but white good-old-boys there watching us. Alison was so shaken by the palpable sense of anger and malevolence, she wouldn’t even use the washroom. I put in just enough gas to be sure I could get us out of Mississippi and on into Tennessee. I can promise you I will do anything I can to never have to visit central Mississippi again. All of this explains why I am so angered by the lying propaganda about my city put forth by Trump and his minions. Contrary to their vilification, Chicago’s per capita murder rate is not even in the top 20 in the nation. And it has been steadily decreasing. (Unlike 46 other major cities which saw RISING murder rates between 2018 and 2023.) Chicago’s only crime is that Trump was outvoted here by Harris by a margin of 71 to 28%. Losing the vote to a Black woman is guaranteed to earn a city Trump’s eternal hatred. I am equally angered by the complete capitulation of most media sources to the Trump lies. Few of them even try to fact-check him any longer. I’m guessing their corporate overlords have decided that it’s easier to live with the lies than to fight Trump. How they manage to stand looking at themselves in a mirror is beyond me. So please, spare me your “concern for my safety.” The only safety we need to worry about is the safety of our Democracy, the safety of the rule of law, and the safety of our Constitutional rights.
