What is new wave?

New wave is a broad, stylistically diverse genre that emerged in the late 1970s and flourished throughout the 1980s. Evolving out of punk rock, it embraced a more polished, eclectic, and synth-driven sound, defined as much by its attitude and aesthetic as by any one musical style.
