American Journal of Public Health Call for Papers:
“How can we address the influence of the ultra-processed food (UPF) industry in shaping our food systems and overreliance on UPFs and what types of science-based policies are required to reduce UPF consumption?"

“The world is facing a plastic pollution crisis that is getting worse every year.”
U.N. negotiators will soon hash out the terms of a global plastics treaty. Experts say they must focus on capping plastics production instead of false solutions like recycling. insideclimatenews.org/news/0907202...
Global Plastics Talks Set to Resume Next Month Must Prioritize Environment and Health, Experts Say - Inside Climate News
Plastics and their toxic chemicals endanger people, wildlife and the environment throughout their life cycle, they warn, calling for production caps in the U.N. treaty.

The world is about to finalize the most consequential legally binding instrument on plastics. It will decide how much #plastic the world will produce for generations. Please read our Editorial in @who.int Bulletin to understand key flaws in the Treaty. It will take 5 minutes.
@ucsf-prhe.bsky.social will be hosting an in-person workshop, How to Conduct Gold-Star Systematic Reviews, this August. I will be joined by @traceywoodruff.bsky.social

It will be held on Sunday, August 17th, from 1-5pm, at the Hotel Indigo in Atlanta. Registration can be found at: bit.ly/sr-aug25
The administration is gutting the most important office at #USEPA, responsible for identifying harms of hazardous chemicals like Gen X, #PFAS. It is critical in preventing chronic diseases like #cancer. Watch @traceywoodruff.bsky.social @ucsf-prhe.bsky.social giving testimony today bit.ly/43kXbiF
Want to learn how we can hold health harming corporations to account? Join us 12pm PT, Thursday May 29 to hear about the work of the @UCSF Center to End Corporate Harm
With clever messaging around MAHA & daily 'shocks', many people are too distracted to understand the #environmental rollbacks taking place. Read 👇why rates of children's #cancer, #parkinsonsdisease & #infertility will skyrocket. bit.ly/41EEgyx
"Make America Healthy Again" is dead
There is nothing RFK Jr. can do at the Department of Health to make up for what's happening at the EPA.

As explained by @fastlerner.bsky.social @propublica.org IRIS assessments have been the cornerstone for setting standards for some of the most lethal #cancer causing #chemcials including #formaldehyde, #chloroprene & #ethyleneoxide.
Cutting this program will lead to sub-standard scientific evaluations, higher levels of #chemical exposures and thus greater rates of disease including #infertility, #cancer and developmental disorder like #Autisim & #ADHD.
"We must restore the integrity of the scientific process by protecting expert recommendations from inappropriate influence and increasing transparency regarding existing data"
Removal of the most critical independent program at USEPA because of corporate capture, led by the American Chemistry Council, is a clear contradiction to the directives of Executive Order 14212 "Establishing the President's Make America Healthy Again Commission" www.propublica.org/article/legi...
Industry-Backed Legislation Would Bar the Use of Science Behind Hundreds of Environmental Protections
Two bills in Congress would prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency from using hundreds of chemical assessments completed by its IRIS program in environmental regulations or enforcement.

Join us on Tuesday Mar 11, 2025, 11:00 AM Pacific Time to hear the findings of our world first rapid systematic review on the health effects of #microplastics. We will discuss what action #governments globally must take now to protect this and future generations from their harms.

IRIS made it possible to confirm what communities already knew - that they were getting sick from toxic chemicals
U.S EPA fails to quantify how many people are harmed at different levels of #chemical exposure for any health effects that are not #cancer, thus, significantly underestimating the true risk of chemicals & the benefits of regulating them. Deeply flawed and dangerous to our #health
Want to "make America healthy again"? Then EPA needs to use and follow the best available science rather than give the chemical industry free rein to poison our air, food, and water.

Universal principles that should be implemented at all regulatory agencies, globally to protect #publichealth and not #corporate interests and profits.
NEW: A team of experts, led by PRHE, has developed recommendations for the new administration to prioritize science and health. They include to safeguard scientific integrity and stop corporate interference in regulatory decision-making.

I have learned so much from @traceywoodruff.bsky.social @nickchartres.bsky.social and my fellow co-authors on this paper. For more on how the framework can improve scientific analyses and toxic chemical regulations:

Paper is here: pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
👇Once established that a #chemical harms human #health the 1st step in using our framework designed for regulatory agencies, like U.S EPA is to determine if it is 'essential' - if not, then prohibit its use immediately.
