“ICE kidnapped a community member here,” reads one. “Never forget/no nos olvidamos,” says another.

The signs have appeared across some of D.C.’s heavily immigrant neighborhoods where federal immigration arrests have escalated.
Signs popping up around D.C. note: ‘ICE kidnapping happened here’
The signs range in style and mark numerous locations where people have been taken by federal agents.

Ok locking this down because rando anons are starting to come into my mentions to argue the merits of geographical determinism

To put my cards on the table, I think these things are the product of the concentration and distribution of capital, the result of both space (geography) and time (history)

People who act confused by Hamas' desire to free Barghoti are bizarre to me, Hamas wants him out even though he isn't Hamas affiliated because they believe he is one of the few, or maybe even the only, individuals who can unite the whole of Palestinian factions under the PLO

Geography isn't destiny. But it can definitely help!

Robert Putnam: Why is North Italy so much more prosperous than South Italy? Are the southerners less capable after centuries of social fragmentation?

Me, two seconds after looking at a map: Maybe. But could it also have something to do with the Po Valley being the one flat piece of land in Italy?

But today's trip was mostly about Bangkok's history as a port destination for Chinese migrants

Started at a migrant museum, walked the Chao Phraya to a wat built in the shape of a migrant ship, then to a mall where the migrants' labor has been packaged for consumption by their affluent descendants

Bangkok's Grand Central Post Office, completed in 1940, an amazing example of Thai-style Neoclassical architecture

It gets really good and then screws up at almost Game of Thrones levels in the last episode. Gets more interested in moving pieces around for the DCU than delivering a satisfying ending to this series, which is basically confirmed to not get a season 3.

Been sitting quietly on public transit with my partner for like an hour and every little bit one of us will ask "whatcha thinking about?" and the other will say "just thinking about how disappointed I am in James Gunn"

Today my daughter's preschool is holding a farewell assembly for one of her classmates whose mother has no choice but to self deport. The school is hoping it will be joyful in tone, so we might make this less upsetting for this 3 year old.

There's just no words for the uselessness of this cruelty.

Mix an influx of 19th century Protestant migration from the cult riddled Midwest with a self-conception of being Heaven on Earth and immense debauched wealth generated from a series of seemingly magical technologies, and you have a recipe for heterodoxy that'd make a Dark Eldar blush

Let me know what you think!

Yeah no, man. That was a stinker, folks. Especially if this is the last season of Peacemaker, I kinda feel robbed.
nickjbrumfield.bsky.social
Maybe it'll get better with the end but this is simply not good TV folks
nickjbrumfield.bsky.social
No spoilers because I'm not done yet but this Peacemaker season finale is the weirdest paced episode of television ever
