In the late 80s, on holiday in Zimbabwe, a teenage me read Hugh Lewis’s Bandiet: Seven Years in an Apartheid Prison.

Banned in my native South Africa, it woke me up to the role of a few white South Africans resisting Apartheid. Very formative.

Making Black children learn maths and science in Afrikaans as a way of undermining their learning in Apartheid South Africa. The 1976 Soweto protests were in response to this. The whole education system was expressly designed to make Black people “hewers of wood & drawers of water”.

There can be no long-lasting peace without justice for the war crimes & full self-determination for the Palestinian people in Gaza & the West Bank.

Shoutout to Westminster Council.
Builders started banging, shouting & drilling outside window at 2pm, breaking Sunday working rules. Lodged noise complaint, received follow up call & visit from Council within an hour. Now peace restored.
