i'm not russian, but i do speak it. and i like it for what it is, a complicated yet fun and vivid language, a gateway to friendships. and i despise it for what it is, a language of oppression and hate that's been raging to this day. and reconciling that in your head without going insane sure is fun

it's the language with the coolest swear palette of them all. english with its lonesome "fuck" could never. i've heard other slavic language can give it a run for its money, but i don't speak them fluently enough to fully appreciate it. maybe i'll learn one someday, can't be harder than japanese

it's the language i talk in with at least half of my friends, all of them the kindest, most brilliant people. some of them are from russia, some not. it's the common bridge between us. its pillars are human bones, and it's cracking at the seams, but i'm still glad it's there for us

my own heritage is an entanglement of eastern european roots, severed and grafted back together and boiled down in the ussr cauldron. i have no distinct culture save for a patchwork of whatever my immediate family accepted as "ours". it is what it is. yet, for what it's worth, i'm fine with it

it's the language of imperialists and colonizers that came to the country i call home and settled their people here so they could later lay claims to this land. they're still trying to destabilize and claim this land. my brain still hangs like windows 95 when i try to speak the natives' tongue

This Tumblr user summarizes something I've been feeling/doing lately. Against everything going on, it somehow feels helpful.

User homoquartz writes: as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. it’s just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we’re small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, “i’m not here to hurt you. here’s something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we’re on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. i’m being light-hearted and non-threatening right now."
Small talk isn't to get to know a person. It's just a greeting to affirm you're buddies in the universe. I am motivated by wanting the other person to know I am friendly, so I have gotten pretty decent at small tall when I used to hate it.
