Had to edit this post...

Fly through the last turn as a kiddo is talking in their room. We have a transporter malfunction hiccup to run over before finding out what the heezd trees are about. I end the game with a score of 17!

Now to pack up...

The next though I had is just how much my legendary officers (Uhura, bones) defined my game. While that's perhaps how it should be, they are famous after all, the abilities of my other officers didn't really compete.

Now whether others will find that compelling, feel a lack of agency as they play, resent the game isn't sure if a challenge or whatever ... That's why others need to try it. And I think it's in a decent spot intention wise.

So I need to finish the rules .. but also give the cards another once over.

My first parting thought here is that, while I did fail a lot of my tasks or have problems, I had to go to lengths to prevent those failures, and doing so generated a lot of points for story. Ultimately that's what Captains is, a story generator.

We speed down a shuttle to support Uhura in a stretcher while McCoy walks in to talk to the obstinate aliens. Somehow he walks out with a treaty signed in the blood of the leading council. Score mission!

While no healing might be considered a big, I think this is fine. Constraints and complications are part of the job, and this is one of them.

Crap .. are the kids getting up?

We fight off the concerned parents, but during the fighting Uhura is injured, meaning she can't help the check. Currently the game doesn't have heal checks (condensing that portion to end-phase operations). If I wait that squeezes time out of my last turns. Bones is gonna forget ahead.

Seems like the anti-hippy movement didn't like that, and were attacked almost immediately!

Wow. Bones affects his best Spock impersonation, and between him and Uhura tell the youth they reach and they're one and Dr. servin's ears are most fascinating. After singing at us, they leave.

Missions will sometimes list challenges as part of the tasks even if you didn't fail, so we gotta run the gauntlet. Bones, Uhura, and Lydia beam down.

After the alien youth ask us this colorful question, bones has to fill Uhura in on the season 3 episode she missed

Welp, this is fun. Two simultaneous timer 3 missions in different parts of the sector. There's a bug on the text of diplomatic visit (ie waiting room: the mission). Still that one is easier and closer so I'll knock that one out first.

Uhura 's voice is tired from all that target skill dropping this turn, but with Arnold's expertise in warp power we finally find the outlet. Akella's or ital station has light again and no body thanks us. Oh well. Score mission!
norsehound.bsky.social
Remembering I had Legendary, I use one to allow Uhura to sweet talk the hosts into the grave importance of our critical maintenance mission, lead by our VIP Leonard McCoy. After an apology, we return to trying to find the outlet in the dark
norsehound.bsky.social
I need to clarify if Uhura can use her ability repeat across the turn. Actions are precious, so I'm gonna let it pass, but the roll to restore power fails and I get my first challenge.
norsehound.bsky.social
Turn 4! An orbital repair mission is up. Sector is the safest it can be. Boldly go!
norsehound.bsky.social
No matches! The 8 is an exploding die, so I roll another and match the three! Success!

McCoy is the one who notices an imposter! Security is maintained! Mission scored!
norsehound.bsky.social
To be extra safe I spend an action to ready a shuttle, then spend it for an additional die. While Nyota's ability puts sweet music through the airwaves, Arnold is dropping confetti from space. Or something.
norsehound.bsky.social
I get one automatic success from my linked minor skill (forensics or duty) but importantly, I have bones. Two dice just need to match to succeed..
I also have two legendary officers onboard. I can add 2 dice across my turn to any check!
norsehound.bsky.social
This is an older version of this card, so it doesn't have the landing party requirement (a bug!) but I have to hit 5 successes with a skill 2 officer, meaning I need a lot of shenanigans.

Things are going so well Starfleet Command authorized another mission. Someone must think we're a passenger service from all the people we haul around.
norsehound.bsky.social
Not wanting to take out chances on the scan, I activate Uhura 's ability. By pulling out a harp and singing, Engineer Kraus' astrophysics ability is sufficient to tell us about the creature. We will not face a beast who can roast the ship.

After a confused moment, it leaves.

Turn 2 and it's more diplomat conveyance. Grabbing our last diplomat and we go investigate a contact by Dossel. It's a sun glider, one of the space creatures from the Starfleet Command computer games.
norsehound.bsky.social
Small aside, but something I'm gonna need to fix is culling the officer deck. More to aesthetics than anything, but I think this deck should reflect 1-2 expansions in, not the base. There's 9 of each department in there.

My crew pummels the raider with twin 7s and finish them off with a torpedo. Head home for the next turn and draw quite a recruitment hand.

Lornak is tempting to drop my ship skill based, but I need a security officer and don't have a doctor on board. Hi, Bones! Now we're a full ship.
norsehound.bsky.social
It takes an action to pickup a cargo and an action to move, but with timer 4 I have some time. I go investigate the contact rather than risk a failed scan and draw a distress signal.
